In active addiction, our disease may cost us all we hold dear: Our physical health, mental stability, and spiritual well-being, as well as our financial security, social standing, dignity, home, and relationships with family members and loved ones. More than anything, our disease robs us of the power of choice. We live only to feed our addiction; in the end, our disease may cost us our very lives.
While others in society may tell us we chose to lie, cheat, steal, and rob in order to feed our habit, we know deep down this wasn’t the case. To be sure, no one chooses to become addicted. Our initial drug use may have been a choice, but certainly not our ensuing enslavement to drugs, alcohol, or compulsive behaviors.
The good news is that in recovery, we can regain the power of choice over our actions. When we get sober, we learn to spot the triggers that once prompted us to pick up; when faced with a craving or a temptation, we instead “play the tape to the end,” and see clearly where it will take us. By working our program of recovery, we can choose not to relapse, but to “rat ourselves out” to our therapist, sponsor, and others in our sober network. In this way, we choose to be accountable.
In dealing with others, we take a hard look at our character defects and resentments. We see where our addiction had led us to behave in ways that were selfish, self-centered, and fearful. With patience and practice, we learn to choose right action over sick thinking and behavior. When we fall short, we choose not to give in to self-pity, but instead, get back on the beam.
Recovery is, in fact, a choice we make each day. We’re granted a daily reprieve from our addiction, “contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition,” according to A.A.’s main text, Alcoholics Anonymous, also known as the “Big Book.” We therefore choose to live one day at a time, making the most of the gift of sobriety that we’ve been granted just for today.
