Yes, Aetna does cover drug and alcohol rehabilitation services in Los Angeles, although the exact level of coverage depends on the specific plan. Under the Affordable Care Act, most insurance providers including Aetna are required to offer benefits for substance use disorder treatment. This often includes services such as medical detox, inpatient rehab, outpatient programs, intensive outpatient treatment, partial hospitalization, aftercare, and support for co-occurring mental health conditions. Some plans also cover therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, family counseling, integrated approaches, and medication-assisted treatment.

If you are considering treatment, it is important to first review your Aetna policy or contact Aetna directly using the number on your insurance card to understand your benefits. You should also reach out to any rehab centers you are interested in to confirm coverage and see what programs they can offer under your plan. Comparing a few different facilities can help you find the best fit for your needs, whether you are looking for a medical detox, dual-diagnosis program, or longer-term residential care.

What Addiction Treatment Programs Does Aetna Cover in Los Angeles?

Addiction treatment programs Aetna typically covers in Los Angeles:

    • Medical Detox for safe withdrawal management

    • Inpatient/Residential Rehab with 24-hour care and structured programs

    • Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) for intensive daytime treatment

    • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for flexible therapy while living at home

    • Standard Outpatient Treatment for ongoing therapy and support

    • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with medications such as buprenorphine and methadone, paired with counseling

    • Dual Diagnosis Treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders

    • Therapies and Counseling including CBT, DBT, family therapy, and integrated options

    • Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) services provided by clinicians

    • Aftercare and Relapse Prevention Programs to support long-term recovery

    • Behavioral Health Coaching and Digital Support Tools for ongoing management and wellness

Does Aetna Insurance Cover Dual Diagnosis Treatment?

Yes, Aetna insurance does cover dual diagnosis treatment, but the exact level of coverage depends on your individual plan. Dual diagnosis treatment is designed for people who are living with both a substance use disorder and a co-occurring mental health condition, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder. Because Aetna plans generally include benefits for both behavioral health and substance use treatment, dual diagnosis programs are often covered when they are deemed medically necessary.

Does Aetna Cover Virtual or Telehealth Addiction Treatment?

Yes, Aetna does cover virtual or telehealth addiction treatment, but the details depend on the specific plan. In recent years, Aetna has expanded its behavioral health benefits to include online and telehealth services, making it easier for members to access treatment for substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions.

Covered telehealth addiction treatment may include:

    • Virtual Assessments and Screenings to determine treatment needs

    • Teletherapy such as individual counseling, group therapy, and family therapy

    • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) management through online visits with prescribing providers

    • Dual Diagnosis Care with virtual mental health and substance use disorder treatment combined

    • Ongoing Support Programs like relapse prevention, behavioral health coaching, and check-ins with recovery specialists

Many Aetna plans cover these services at the same rate as in-person visits, and some waive or reduce copays for telehealth. The type of coverage will depend on whether the provider is in-network, the level of care needed, and whether prior authorization is required.

How to Use Aetna Insurance for Rehab

    • Check Your Plan: Log into your Aetna member portal or review your policy documents. Look for details under behavioral health, substance use, or mental health services, and note important information like deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket maximums.

    • Verify With Aetna: Call the number on your insurance card to confirm your benefits. Ask what levels of care are covered, such as detox, inpatient rehab, outpatient programs, or telehealth. Be sure to check if your plan includes dual diagnosis treatment and medication-assisted treatment.

    • Find In-Network Providers: Use Aetna’s provider directory or ask a representative for referrals to in-network rehab centers. Staying in-network usually means lower costs and fewer billing complications.

    • Get Pre-Authorization (If Needed): Some Aetna plans require approval before you start treatment. Rehab facilities often handle the pre-authorization process by submitting medical documentation directly to Aetna.

    • Confirm With the Rehab Center: Once you select a facility, ask them to verify your benefits with Aetna. Request an estimate of your out-of-pocket costs and confirm whether they bill Aetna directly.

    • Begin Treatment: After admission, you will go through intake and assessments to start your treatment program. Aetna may request updates during your stay to ensure continued coverage.

    • Use Aftercare Benefits: Many Aetna plans cover outpatient counseling, relapse prevention, and telehealth services after rehab. Ask about ongoing mental health and recovery support included in your plan.

Can I Use Aetna Insurance in a Different State?

Yes, you can often use Aetna insurance in a different state, but coverage depends on your plan type. For PPO plans, you can usually see providers across state lines, and while you may receive some out-of-network benefits, staying in-network generally lowers your costs. HMO plans are more restrictive and typically only cover care within your network and service area, with out-of-state treatment generally limited to emergencies unless the facility is part of the HMO network. EPO and POS plans vary, with some offering out-of-state care only if the provider is in-network, while others provide limited out-of-network coverage. Emergency care is covered nationwide, even if you are out of state or out of network. For rehab or behavioral health treatment in another state, Aetna may cover the program if the facility is in-network and treatment is medically necessary. Prior authorization is often required, and the rehab center can assist in verifying your benefits.

Aetna Insurance Eligibility for Rehab Coverage

Most Aetna plans include coverage for substance use disorder treatment, such as inpatient and outpatient rehab, detoxification, and behavioral therapies, as required under the Affordable Care Act. The extent of coverage, copayments, deductibles, and requirements for prior authorization vary by plan. Coverage is influenced by factors such as plan type, with PPO plans typically offering broader access including some out-of-network providers, while HMO plans usually require care within a specific network. Treatment must meet Aetna’s criteria for medical necessity, and many plans require pre-authorization for inpatient rehab or detox programs. Using an in-network facility generally reduces out-of-pocket costs. To determine your eligibility, review your plan documents or log into your Aetna member portal, contact Aetna customer service to confirm coverage specifics, reach out to rehab centers to verify that they accept your insurance, and obtain pre-authorization if required.

Medical necessity for rehab is the standard insurance companies like Aetna use to determine whether treatment is required for a health condition. For substance use disorder, this typically means your condition meets clinical criteria showing that rehab is essential to stabilize your health, prevent deterioration, and support long-term recovery. Factors that establish medical necessity often include the severity of your substance use disorder, evidence that outpatient treatment or previous detox attempts have failed, risk of withdrawal complications, co-occurring mental health conditions, and functional impairment that affects daily responsibilities, employment, or personal care. Coverage may be denied if the treatment is not considered medically necessary, if you use a non-network provider, if documentation is incomplete, if the program is experimental or non-evidence-based, or if required prior authorization is not obtained. Ensuring proper documentation, using in-network providers, and securing pre-authorization when needed can significantly increase the likelihood that Aetna will approve your rehab coverage.

      • Absolutely the best recovery center around.

I am forever grateful to have had this experience. I would recommend anyone who wanted help to come here. This place literally saved my life. I have overcome so many obstacles that always stood in the way of my recovery. It’s not just because I was ready… the approaches the therapists use come from an empathetic, compassionate, and understanding place. They were able to hold the mirror up and help guide me through making solid changes.

      • This place literally saved my life.

After overdosing, my parents forced me to check into rehab. After interviewing many other facilities, I decided to go to Harmony Place from my home in Phoenix. I was struggling with…a drug addiction and had been trying for years to recover. In the past, left 2 treatment centers AMA and 1 AWOL. I had very negative experiences in the other treatment facilities, especially with my therapists, so I didn’t go in with an open mind or good attitude- even though they worked with my parents regarding finances. However, the staff was patient with me. The techs were kind, knowledgeable, and many were in recovery themselves.

      • They Answered on the First Call

When I called Harmony Place…I knew immediately that this was the right place for my child… Harmony Place is specifically designed for…and tailored to providing a safe environment. The staff [are knowledgeable and some are in recovery]. The staff knew each client and were on top of each client’s progress. Harmony Place has a small clientele and each client are able to receive all the help they were entitled to. I would recommend Harmony Place to anyone who is looking for a small setting… My daughter is currently going into sober living and her counselors did a wonderful job in finding a right fit for her – affordable, safe and a good environment for her.

      • I’ve Been Searching for the Perfect Words…

I left Harmony Place in August of 2015 and I have been searching for the perfect words to describe my experience during my stay; and still I can’t really find them. How do you really describe a place with a staff and a program that saved you? Addiction is a terrible thing to go through and a heart breaking thing for your loved ones to watch. Many people, including myself go into different treatment centers throughout their addiction searching for ways to find recovery. Nothing worked for me, not the 5 rehab stays I had, then, I came here.

I’ve been to 4 treatment centers before Harmony Place, and I can tell you without a single doubt that this is the absolute best by FAR. The past ones were luxury Residential Treatment centers that just treated every single client the same not tailoring to each individual, and were basically just in it for the money, dropping the ball each time. I can also tell you that I’ve never met the CEOs, but here, David comes to the facility almost every single day, and makes sure he get to know every individual here. He is incredibly kind, and was even willing to transfer me to another facility with a higher level of trauma therapy due to me having a lifetime of trauma and PTSD that just is going to take a long time to tackle. He truly cares about all of the clients having all of the tools that we need before getting released to the real world. No more of other CEO would ever be willing to miss an opportunity at making more money and even paired with my IMPECCABLE case manager to find a different facility that was more trauma based. My case manager, Sam, goes absolutely above and beyond in every single aspect. She makes sure you have a smooth transition into aftercare, provides out of this world advice when it comes to sobriety, and takes the time out of her day to make sure that FMLA and short-term disability are completely taken care of during your stay. I’ve never met a case manager that could ever compare to Sam. Ever. I feel lucky to have met her, genuinely. Marissa, my therapist, is SO SWEET, actually listens to you, and provides advice and therapy tailored to each individual’s experience. She’s handled every mood I’ve been in, never judged me, and allowed me to feel safe enough to tell her things I’ve never told any person or therapist in my 29 years of life. I’ve been going to therapy for the past 15 years, and none of those therapists even come close to how amazing she is. I’ve been to 4 other treatment centers in my life and none even come close to Harmony Place. The facility is clean, organized, and high-end. I would recommend Harmony place to my family, friends, and anyone seeking treatment. I feel SO BLESSED to have landed in their hands. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE IN THE CLINICAL STAFF BEYOND WORDS. I love you guys ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. I feel more confident than ever in my Recovery.

Where to begin.. Harmony is a place that will forever be a part of my story as the first step in my recovery journey. I’m so grateful for this program. The staff is very friendly, and many of them understand what addiction is like, for they themselves have recovery stories of their own. They have an awesome team of therapists, group facilitators, nurses, RA technicians, medical and health professionals, a wonderful case manager for aftercare that cares deeply for your next steps; making sure you are set up for success. They have a wonderful admissions team (shoutout to Marielle who was so kind and understanding of my messed up situation). Everyone is very relatable and friendly. They invest heavily in the importance of diet and nutrition too - there’s a full time professional chef. I gained all the weight I lost and wanted back in the first two weeks lol. On top of the intensive programming they do throughout the day, they take us out to experience various kinds of outside groups to get a taste of the real world, and also take us on social outings during the weekend. If you’re serious about getting better this place will meet you where you’re at and prepare you to launch with a renewed mind and heart.

I can't begin to explain just how amazing Harmony Place is. In fact, when we sit down with the owner, Jeff, and clinical director, David, on Monday mornings to have a house meeting, they ask us what they could be doing better. A bigger blender for smoothies is the ONLY thing we could come up with. Let me begin by addressing some negative reviews. If you notice many of them are from people, or are referring to people who have been asked to leave. It is because of harmony places protection of their clients that provide ideal conditions for healing and progress. There is a screening process that it is implemented where they make sure the clients they admit are ready to start a life of sobriety. Some people slip through the cracks. Some people find out a few days or weeks in that they've changed their minds. Some are inappropriate and break rules. It happens. When Harmony Place ask people to leave, It's because they are protecting the people who are here that want treatment. In effect, they're providing exactly what I needed for a genuine start to recovery. When I began my search for a treatment center, my requirements were that the facility's provide an environment in which its residents all want to be there and that it is ethically ran. I got that and so much more at Harmony Place. As well as a structured routine, they also provide a confidential and nurturing environment where one feels safe and where profound healing can begin. Their program offers a sound foundation where further progress in sober living is almost guaranteed. In group meetings, we enjoy getting to know ourselves again and with deeper understanding about why we are the way we are. We are provided with skills to handle real life. Its here that I've come to understand that its not addiction that has driven me to make a mess of my life. It is the trauma that I endured and not processing it correctly that lead to poor thinking patterns that opened the door to addiction resulting in poor life management. So we start at the bottom. Trauma. They help us understand that trauma has led to our own toxicity, what that trauma looks like and how to get out of our own way. Process groups help us learn how to take accountability and foster healthier relationships. I learned here that changing the way I think is absolutely possible and imperative to the healing process. Harmony Place offered me hope when I previously felt I was unfixable and a support team that truly loves me. Even after I leave here, I have contacts that almost demand I keep in touch and an alumni meeting where I can return to the facility on Thursday nights. I wasn't a 12 stepper when I came here but my first experience with it was not one where I was ready to stop using. I understand now that the steps will work for me. It's certainly is not the only modality that they teach. In one group, we are provided an opportunity to sit with a recently retired medical doctor to just ask questions. Another is with a nutritionist. There are a handful of people IN recovery that come to lead groups that are all accredited highly specialized where I felt understood and not judged. The knowledge I have gained here is life changing. It is also versatile and relatable for all types of people. my favorite group was dialectical behavioral therapy. There are breathing classes and sound bath groups and I started doing yoga in the morning. There's a dharma meeting they take you offsite that focuses on Buddhist values. A fantastic onsight chef provides three meals and you can have special requests. We facilitated our own Movie nights during free time. I cant forget to mention you get your own one on one meetings with your assigned primary therapist and there is comprehensive medical support complete with 24/7 nurses and a doctor that shows up throughout the week. If this is what you need to recover and you have mediCAL, cancel your mediCAL and get insurance Harmony Place accepts if you can. There are people to help you with that as well. Just call. Many, many thanks to the staff. ✔️Another life changed.🙏
