What is a Detox?
Detoxification is typically the first step in the recovery process. A detox is when toxins from alcohol or drugs are essentially removed from the body. This is achieved by abstaining from drugs and alcohol. This can be anxiety-inducing for those who are faced with addiction. However, a medical detox ensures the detox process is as comfortable as possible.
Further, a medical detox is necessary because when a person goes through the detox process, they often experience unpleasant side effects. These side effects are not only uncomfortable, but they can also be life-threatening under certain circumstances. Medical detox provides safety and moral support.
A professional medical detox provides clients with medication-assisted treatment (MAT). The medication-assisted treatment uses FDA-approved medications along with behavioral therapy. These medications help alleviate negative side effects that clients can experience when going through a detox. In addition, MAT helps to calm cravings. Lastly, MAT is especially beneficial for those addicted to opioids and who have an alcohol addiction.
What Does Withdrawal During Opiate Detox Look Like?
Opiates and opioid addiction are unfortunately common in the United States. Whether it’s an illicit or prescription drug the withdrawal effects can be very unpleasant for users.
Here are a few withdrawal signs:
- Abdominal cramps and diarrhea
- Muscle aches and spasms
- Anxiety
- Irritability
- Insomnia
- Depression
- Runny nose
- Rapid heart rate
- Chills and sweating
These particular symptoms are not life-threatening, however, they are incredibly hard to manage alone. As a result, many people who attempt an in home detox in Los Angeles often end up relapsing.
Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Symptoms
Benzodiazepine or benzos can induce feelings of calm and relaxation. However, the body can become used to these drugs and develop a tolerance. During a drug, where an individual is no longer taking these drugs symptoms can occur during the withdrawal process.
Here are a few of those symptoms:
- Muscle spasms and tremors
- Restlessness and irritability
- Nausea and vomiting
- Anxiety
- Headaches
- Seizures
- Sweating or chills
The Side-Effects of an Alcohol Detox
Like many substances, if a person has been drinking alcohol for months or years the nervous system can become used to alcohol being in the system. As a result, an individual can experience withdrawal if there is a sudden stop in consumption.
Alcohol withdrawal can include:
- Restlessness anxiety and irritability
- Difficulty concentrating
- High fever
- Sleep difficulties
- Nausea and vomiting
More severe cases of alcohol withdrawal can become life-threatening. There can be instances of seizures, hallucinations, and even delirium. However, a medically assisted alcohol detox can mitigate these severe withdrawal symptoms.

Should I Detox at Home?
It is typically not recommended for people to detox at home. While this may sound very convenient on the surface it can be dangerous. This is mainly due to the withdrawal symptoms that come with the detox process. In addition, a home detox can increase the chance of a relapse. There are a few reasons that contribute to the likelihood of a relapse at home.
With a home detox, a person may still have access to the substance they are addicted to. This combined with extremely unpleasant withdrawal symptoms can actually lead a person to begin using again. Without the support of a professional medical detox center, using may be the only option to come extremely unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.
Who May Benefit From a Medical Detox?
A detox will work for anyone who needs help to quit drugs or alcohol. Also, a detox center is great for someone who is unable to quit on their own. In many cases, this will be most people. Quitting alone is extremely difficult. This is because there are many temptations at home. In addition, the withdrawal effects can be too much to bear alone. Therefore, this often leads to relapse.
Detox is hugely beneficial for someone who has been using drugs and alcohol for an extended period of time. Moreover, detox allows an individual to cleanse their body of the toxins that can come from drugs and alcohol.
Finally, a professional medical detox allows a person to receive support while they embark on their journey of sobriety. Medical detox helps calm the withdrawal symptoms so people can go through the process comfortably with relapse prevention treatment.
What Happens After a Detox?
A detox allows a person to successfully stop using without the risk of negative or fatal withdrawal effects. However, this is not the final step in the journey to sobriety. There are more lasting Behavior changes that need to be implemented for a person to make a full recovery from drugs or alcohol.
This is where a comprehensive treatment program comes into play. After detoxing at a residential detox center, a client will go through residential treatment. Next, the client will eventually transition into an outpatient program for extended care. Through all these phases, the individual will receive clinical and holistic services that are tailored to their specific needs.
These evidence-based holistic services allow the person to not only heal their body but also their mind. As a result, the person can understand and learn how to live a healthy sober life that will leave them to feel feeling fulfilled. Here at Harmony, our alcohol detox in Los Angeles and our drug detox in Los Angeles specializes in providing clients with tailored services to help them reach sobriety.

Absolutely the best recovery center around.
I am forever grateful to have had this experience. I would recommend anyone who wanted help to come here. This place literally saved my life. I have overcome so many obstacles that always stood in the way of my recovery. It’s not just because I was ready… the approaches the therapists use come from an empathetic, compassionate, and understanding place. They were able to hold the mirror up and help guide me through making solid changes.

This place literally saved my life.
After overdosing, my parents forced me to check into rehab. After interviewing many other facilities, I decided to go to Harmony Place from my home in Phoenix. I was struggling with…a drug addiction and had been trying for years to recover. In the past, left 2 treatment centers AMA and 1 AWOL. I had very negative experiences in the other treatment facilities, especially with my therapists, so I didn’t go in with an open mind or good attitude- even though they worked with my parents regarding finances. However, the staff was patient with me. The techs were kind, knowledgeable, and many were in recovery themselves.

They Answered on the First Call
When I called Harmony Place…I knew immediately that this was the right place for my child… Harmony Place is specifically designed for…and tailored to providing a safe environment. The staff [are knowledgeable and some are in recovery]. The staff knew each client and were on top of each client’s progress. Harmony Place has a small clientele and each client are able to receive all the help they were entitled to. I would recommend Harmony Place to anyone who is looking for a small setting… My daughter is currently going into sober living and her counselors did a wonderful job in finding a right fit for her – affordable, safe and a good environment for her.

I’ve Been Searching for the Perfect Words…
I left Harmony Place in August of 2015 and I have been searching for the perfect words to describe my experience during my stay; and still I can’t really find them. How do you really describe a place with a staff and a program that saved you? Addiction is a terrible thing to go through and a heart breaking thing for your loved ones to watch. Many people, including myself go into different treatment centers throughout their addiction searching for ways to find recovery. Nothing worked for me, not the 5 rehab stays I had, then, I came here.
