What Is Drug and Alcohol Addiction?

Drug and alcohol addiction refers to a chronic, relapsing disease described by compulsive substance seeking and use despite harmful consequences. Patients with addiction often experience profound changes in brain function, leading to intense cravings and a diminished ability to control their behavior. This condition affects the patient’s physical health, psychological health, and relationships.

For patients, addiction can begin with experimentation or recreational use but can quickly escalate into a compulsive need for the substance. Factors such as genetics, environment, and underlying mental health illnesses contribute to the development of addiction. Treatment involves a variety of therapies, including medication and behavioral therapies like group therapy, aimed at treating the complexities of addiction and sustaining long-term sobriety efforts.

What Is Addiction Group Therapy for Substance Abuse?

Addiction group therapy is a therapeutic approach where patients with substance use disorders come together in a structured setting to share experiences, provide mutual support, and work towards recovery goals. These sessions are facilitated by therapists who lead discussions and support group therapy activities designed to foster understanding, coping skills, and social connections among patients facing similar challenges.

In addiction group therapy, patients gain a sense of belonging and validation from peers who understand the struggles of addiction firsthand. This environment promotes honesty, empathy, and accountability, crucial elements in the recovery process. Group therapy sessions may focus on various aspects of recovery, such as relapse prevention strategies, coping mechanisms, and exploring underlying issues contributing to addiction. By participating in group therapy or online group therapy, patients receive support and learn from others’ experiences, enhancing their motivation and commitment to maintaining sobriety. Does Group Therapy Work?

Yes, group therapy has been shown to be an effective form of addiction treatment for many individuals. Research indicates that participating in group therapy can improve motivation, reduce feelings of isolation, and provide practical strategies for coping with cravings and triggers. The shared experiences of peers help participants gain perspective, learn from others’ successes and setbacks, and build a sense of accountability that can enhance recovery outcomes.

Group therapy is most effective when combined with other treatments, such as individual therapy, medical detox, and medication-assisted treatment. It offers a safe and structured environment where individuals can practice communication skills, explore emotional challenges, and receive immediate support from both facilitators and peers.

While results vary depending on the individual and their level of engagement, many people report that regular participation in group therapy strengthens long-term sobriety and provides a supportive network that extends beyond formal treatment. In Los Angeles, where many rehab centers integrate group therapy with integrated approaches and culturally sensitive programs, participants often experience both personal growth and lasting connections that aid in recovery.

What Are the Benefits of Group Therapy for Substance Abuse?

Join us in learning what makes our group therapy in Los Angeles, CA, so effective.

How Long Does Group Therapy for Addiction Last?

The duration of group therapy for addiction treatment can vary depending on the program type, treatment goals, and individual needs. In Los Angeles rehab centers, intensive outpatient programs (IOP) often include group sessions that meet three to five times per week for 2 to 3 hours each, typically lasting 8 to 12 weeks. Inpatient or residential programs may feature daily group therapy as part of a structured schedule, with sessions running anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours each day over several weeks or months.

Some programs also offer long-term or continuing group therapy as part of aftercare, which may occur weekly or monthly for several months or even years to support sustained sobriety. The frequency and length of sessions are designed to provide consistent support, skill-building, and accountability, allowing participants to gradually apply what they learn to daily life.

Patients learn to identify triggers, manage cravings, and prevent relapse through cognitive techniques like challenging distorted thinking and behavioral methods such as role-playing and experiments, fostering effective coping and decision-making skills.

Therapists in CBT groups work collaboratively with patients to set achievable goals, monitor progress, and reinforce positive changes in behavior. Through structured exercises and discussions, patients gain an understanding of the relationships between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors connected to addiction. This approach not only helps patients develop practical strategies for managing cravings and stress but also enhances their overall well-being by fostering a greater sense of self-control and resilience in recovery from addiction.

    Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Groups

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) groups are crucial in addiction treatment. They integrate cognitive behavioral methods with mindfulness to enhance skills in mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. These groups help patients manage cravings and impulsive behaviors by fostering self-awareness and effective emotional management strategies.

Additionally, DBT emphasizes distress tolerance skills, teaching patients how to cope with intense emotions and crises without resorting to substance use. Emotion regulation techniques help patients identify and manage their emotions effectively, reducing the urge to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. Interpersonal effectiveness skills focus on improving communication, assertiveness, and conflict resolution skills, or skills that are essential for keeping healthy relationships and social support networks in recovery. DBT groups provide a structured and supportive environment where patients can practice these skills, receive feedback from peers, and work towards lasting behavioral changes that support long-term sobriety and emotional well-being.

    Family Therapy Groups

Family therapy groups play a crucial role in addiction treatment by involving both patients and their family members or significant others. These sessions focus on improving communication, resolving conflicts, and strengthening support systems. By exploring how addiction impacts relationships, families work together to rebuild trust and foster a supportive environment essential for the patient’s recovery journey.

Therapists in family therapy groups facilitate discussions that address underlying family dynamics, patterns of interaction, and roles that may contribute to or exacerbate substance use. By involving family members in the therapeutic process, these groups foster understanding and empathy among all parties, enhancing mutual support and accountability in the patient’s recovery. Family therapy groups help patients develop healthier coping mechanisms and communication skills and empower families to actively participate in the healing process, ultimately promoting long-term sobriety and emotional well-being for all involved.

    Art and Expressive Therapy Groups

Expressive and art therapy in groups is integral in addiction treatment, encouraging patients to use creative mediums like painting, music, and drama to explore and express emotions and experiences related to addiction. This non-verbal approach fosters self-discovery and emotional healing, allowing patients to process complex feelings that verbal communication alone may not capture effectively.

Therapists in art and expressive therapy groups guide patients through structured activities designed to enhance self-awareness, enhance emotional regulation, and create healthy coping mechanisms. Through artistic expression, patients can process trauma, reduce stress, and gain insights into their addiction triggers and recovery journey. These groups provide a secure atmosphere where patients can explore creativity, build confidence, and discover new ways of expressing themselves beyond words alone, fostering personal growth and resilience in addiction recovery.

    Career or Vocational Support Groups

Career or vocational support groups in addiction treatment assist patients in reentering the workforce or pursuing meaningful careers. They offer structured settings for exploring interests, identifying strengths, and receiving guidance on resume writing, job searching, and interview skills. These groups aim to boost self-esteem, purpose, and financial stability, which is crucial for sustained recovery.

In career or vocational support groups, therapists and career counselors collaborate to offer personalized guidance and resources tailored to each patient’s career goals and aspirations. Patients benefit from peer support, networking opportunities within the group, practical skills development workshops, and feedback on career-related challenges. This integrated approach not only helps patients secure employment but also promotes long-term stability and fulfillment, reducing the likelihood of relapse by providing meaningful activities and goals to pursue outside of addiction.

    Recovery Meeting Support Groups

Recovery meeting support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA), are crucial in addiction treatment, offering patients vital peer support and encouragement for maintaining sobriety. These structured gatherings provide a platform for sharing experiences, discussing recovery strategies, and embracing the Twelve Steps program, fostering personal growth and resilience in addiction recovery efforts.

In recovery meeting support groups, patients benefit from the collective wisdom and understanding of peers who have faced similar challenges with addiction. The supportive environment fosters accountability, solidarity, and a sense of community, which are crucial for patients navigating the ups and downs of recovery. Attendance at these meetings reinforces commitment to sobriety, provides ongoing motivation, and offers practical strategies for managing triggers and maintaining a healthy lifestyle beyond addiction.

What to Expect When Attending Group Therapy at Harmony Place Los Angeles

Group therapy sessions are either open or closed. An open group therapy session means new people can join whenever they want. On the other hand, a closed session means that the same people remain in the session without newcomers. Closed groups tend to have a specific time frame for how long they last, typically anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Open groups tend to be ongoing, meaning that people can come and go from the group from meeting to meeting.

While group sessions typically are led by a single therapist, in some cases, two or more therapists might lead the session. All therapists are licensed and specially trained to conduct addiction therapy sessions. Unlike in individual therapy sessions, the therapist’s role during group meetings is to set and reinforce group rules and guidelines.

The therapist will also lead the group process and ensure the atmosphere is cohesive, healthy, safe, and productive for all participants. During the session, the therapist will typically ask questions, give feedback when necessary or appropriate, encourage participation, and observe how everyone interacts.

Just as with individual therapy, the goal of group therapy is to get everyone to participate in a way that will move them closer and closer to their goal of sobriety. Group sizes vary, and with that, so do the length of the meetings. The meeting length is set to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to contribute and participate.

What is the Cost of Group Therapy for Substance Abuse?

Group therapy costs for substance abuse can range widely, typically from $50 to $150 per session, depending on factors like location, treatment facility, and session duration. Fees may vary further based on specific therapies offered and whether sliding scale options or insurance coverage are available, impacting affordability and access for patients seeking comprehensive addiction treatment.

Patients seeking group therapy for drug and alcohol addiction should inquire directly with treatment centers to understand the specific costs of treatment involved and any potential financial assistance options available. Insurance coverage can also significantly impact costs, with many health insurance plans covering at least a portion of therapy expenses. It’s essential for patients to explore their insurance benefits and discuss payment options with treatment providers to ensure access to the necessary therapy while managing costs effectively. For help navigating the insurance process for treatment, contact us at Harmony Place. We can help you check your insurance plan coverage levels for group therapy and find the right group for your treatment needs.

Admissions Process for a Substance Use Disorder in Group Therapy

The admissions process typically begins with a free initial assessment to determine the severity and nature of the individual’s addiction. This assessment may include interviews, questionnaires, and possibly medical examinations conducted by healthcare professionals.

During this phase, the individual’s medical history, substance use and addiction patterns, and any co-occurring mental health disorders are thoroughly reviewed. This evaluation helps create a personalized treatment plan that meets the individual’s needs. The free assessment phase also allows individuals to ask questions and understand what to expect from the group therapy sessions, ensuring they are mentally prepared for the commitment ahead.

Following the initial assessment, the individual is usually placed into an appropriate therapy group based on their specific needs and the stage of their recovery. These groups are often categorized by the type and severity of addiction, the presence of co-occurring disorders, and other demographic factors to ensure a supportive and relatable environment. The admissions process also involves administrative steps, such as completing necessary paperwork, verifying insurance coverage, and scheduling the first session. Throughout the SUD admissions process, the goal is to ensure a smooth transition into the therapy program, providing the individual with the best possible start on their path to recovery. Regular follow-ups and progress evaluations are typically scheduled to monitor the individual’s progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

Typical Group Therapy Program Process for Drug and Alcohol Addiction

The process of drug and alcohol addiction group therapy entails structured sessions where patients engage in supportive environments conducive to recovery. Common therapy methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing (MI) are employed to treat addiction behaviors, enhance coping skills, foster peer support, and promote sustained sobriety and overall well-being.

    Common therapy methods include:

    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Focuses on identifying and adjusting negative thoughts and behaviors linked to addiction. Patients learn coping strategies to manage triggers and prevent relapse.
    • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Integrates mindfulness techniques with skills to regulate emotions, improve interpersonal relationships, and cope with stress without turning to substances.
    • Motivational Interviewing (MI): A client-centered approach that explores ambivalence towards change and enhances motivation for sobriety through collaborative conversations and goal-setting.
    • Group Counseling: Provides a supportive environment where patients share experiences, offer mutual support, and receive feedback from peers and therapists. These groups include group therapy for adolescents and group therapy for social skills.
    • Psychoeducation: Offers information about addiction, coping strategies, and relapse prevention techniques to empower patients with knowledge about their condition and recovery process.

These methods are typically conducted in structured sessions, often weekly or biweekly, with a focus on treating the psychological and behavioral characteristics of addiction while fostering a sense of community and support among patients.

Alternatives to Group Therapy for Addiction Treatment

While group therapy is highly effective for many people, it is not the only approach to addiction treatment. Individual therapy offers personalized, one-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist, allowing for deeper exploration of personal issues, trauma, and triggers. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) combines behavioral therapy with medications to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, and is particularly effective for opioid, alcohol, and certain other substance use disorders.

Family therapy is another alternative, focusing on repairing relationships and creating a supportive home environment for recovery. Some people also benefit from integrated approaches, including yoga, meditation, art therapy, or equine-assisted therapy, which address the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of addiction. Outpatient programs provide structured therapy and medical supervision while allowing participants to maintain work, school, or family responsibilities.

For individuals who prefer privacy or are uncomfortable sharing in a group setting, these alternatives can provide flexible and tailored recovery options. Often, the most effective treatment plans combine multiple approaches, blending individual therapy, integrated practices, and supportive resources to create a comprehensive strategy for long-term sobriety.

I've been to 12 rehabs over the last 20 years and NO other place has touch like Harmony Place! From the owner right down to the cleaning lady, everyone here is kinda and warm. God has blessed this place and I feel privileged to have come through here. I recommend anyone who is going through their struggle with mental health or substance abuse to pick up the phone and come! You won't regret it!

I had very good experience at Harmony Place From first day I came, staff was very kind and make me feel welcome and safe. Everyone was friendly and always try to help me. The therapists are very good and caring. They listen to me and help me understand my problems better. I learn many things from them and feel stronger because of their support. The nurses also very nice and professional. They always check on me and make sure I am okay. Food was good and facilities were clean and comfortable. It help me feel more relaxed and focus on my recovery. Management also doing very good job. Everything was organized and you can see they really care about patients. I am very thankful for this place and all the people who work here. I recommend this center to anyone who needs help.

I’ve been to 4 treatment centers before Harmony Place, and I can tell you without a single doubt that this is the absolute best by FAR. The past ones were luxury Residential Treatment centers that just treated every single client the same not tailoring to each individual, and were basically just in it for the money, dropping the ball each time. I can also tell you that I’ve never met the CEOs, but here, David comes to the facility almost every single day, and makes sure he get to know every individual here. He is incredibly kind, and was even willing to transfer me to another facility with a higher level of trauma therapy due to me having a lifetime of trauma and PTSD that just is going to take a long time to tackle. He truly cares about all of the clients having all of the tools that we need before getting released to the real world. No more of other CEO would ever be willing to miss an opportunity at making more money and even paired with my IMPECCABLE case manager to find a different facility that was more trauma based. My case manager, Sam, goes absolutely above and beyond in every single aspect. She makes sure you have a smooth transition into aftercare, provides out of this world advice when it comes to sobriety, and takes the time out of her day to make sure that FMLA and short-term disability are completely taken care of during your stay. I’ve never met a case manager that could ever compare to Sam. Ever. I feel lucky to have met her, genuinely. Marissa, my therapist, is SO SWEET, actually listens to you, and provides advice and therapy tailored to each individual’s experience. She’s handled every mood I’ve been in, never judged me, and allowed me to feel safe enough to tell her things I’ve never told any person or therapist in my 29 years of life. I’ve been going to therapy for the past 15 years, and none of those therapists even come close to how amazing she is. I’ve been to 4 other treatment centers in my life and none even come close to Harmony Place. The facility is clean, organized, and high-end. I would recommend Harmony place to my family, friends, and anyone seeking treatment. I feel SO BLESSED to have landed in their hands. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE IN THE CLINICAL STAFF BEYOND WORDS. I love you guys ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. I feel more confident than ever in my Recovery.

Where to begin.. Harmony is a place that will forever be a part of my story as the first step in my recovery journey. I’m so grateful for this program. The staff is very friendly, and many of them understand what addiction is like, for they themselves have recovery stories of their own. They have an awesome team of therapists, group facilitators, nurses, RA technicians, medical and health professionals, a wonderful case manager for aftercare that cares deeply for your next steps; making sure you are set up for success. They have a wonderful admissions team (shoutout to Marielle who was so kind and understanding of my messed up situation). Everyone is very relatable and friendly. They invest heavily in the importance of diet and nutrition too - there’s a full time professional chef. I gained all the weight I lost and wanted back in the first two weeks lol. On top of the intensive programming they do throughout the day, they take us out to experience various kinds of outside groups to get a taste of the real world, and also take us on social outings during the weekend. If you’re serious about getting better this place will meet you where you’re at and prepare you to launch with a renewed mind and heart.

I can't begin to explain just how amazing Harmony Place is. In fact, when we sit down with the owner, Jeff, and clinical director, David, on Monday mornings to have a house meeting, they ask us what they could be doing better. A bigger blender for smoothies is the ONLY thing we could come up with. Let me begin by addressing some negative reviews. If you notice many of them are from people, or are referring to people who have been asked to leave. It is because of harmony places protection of their clients that provide ideal conditions for healing and progress. There is a screening process that it is implemented where they make sure the clients they admit are ready to start a life of sobriety. Some people slip through the cracks. Some people find out a few days or weeks in that they've changed their minds. Some are inappropriate and break rules. It happens. When Harmony Place ask people to leave, It's because they are protecting the people who are here that want treatment. In effect, they're providing exactly what I needed for a genuine start to recovery. When I began my search for a treatment center, my requirements were that the facility's provide an environment in which its residents all want to be there and that it is ethically ran. I got that and so much more at Harmony Place. As well as a structured routine, they also provide a confidential and nurturing environment where one feels safe and where profound healing can begin. Their program offers a sound foundation where further progress in sober living is almost guaranteed. In group meetings, we enjoy getting to know ourselves again and with deeper understanding about why we are the way we are. We are provided with skills to handle real life. Its here that I've come to understand that its not addiction that has driven me to make a mess of my life. It is the trauma that I endured and not processing it correctly that lead to poor thinking patterns that opened the door to addiction resulting in poor life management. So we start at the bottom. Trauma. They help us understand that trauma has led to our own toxicity, what that trauma looks like and how to get out of our own way. Process groups help us learn how to take accountability and foster healthier relationships. I learned here that changing the way I think is absolutely possible and imperative to the healing process. Harmony Place offered me hope when I previously felt I was unfixable and a support team that truly loves me. Even after I leave here, I have contacts that almost demand I keep in touch and an alumni meeting where I can return to the facility on Thursday nights. I wasn't a 12 stepper when I came here but my first experience with it was not one where I was ready to stop using. I understand now that the steps will work for me. It's certainly is not the only modality that they teach. In one group, we are provided an opportunity to sit with a recently retired medical doctor to just ask questions. Another is with a nutritionist. There are a handful of people IN recovery that come to lead groups that are all accredited highly specialized where I felt understood and not judged. The knowledge I have gained here is life changing. It is also versatile and relatable for all types of people. my favorite group was dialectical behavioral therapy. There are breathing classes and sound bath groups and I started doing yoga in the morning. There's a dharma meeting they take you offsite that focuses on Buddhist values. A fantastic onsight chef provides three meals and you can have special requests. We facilitated our own Movie nights during free time. I cant forget to mention you get your own one on one meetings with your assigned primary therapist and there is comprehensive medical support complete with 24/7 nurses and a doctor that shows up throughout the week. If this is what you need to recover and you have mediCAL, cancel your mediCAL and get insurance Harmony Place accepts if you can. There are people to help you with that as well. Just call. Many, many thanks to the staff. ✔️Another life changed.🙏
