UNDERSTANDING MEDICAL DETOX

What is a Medical Detox Program?

Medical detox is the process of managing withdrawal as your body adjusts to functioning without drugs or alcohol. At Harmony Place, our residential detox program provides medical supervision, individualized care, and a supportive environment to help you navigate this important first step toward recovery.

Withdrawal symptoms can range from mild discomfort to serious medical complications, depending on the substance, duration of use, and your overall health. Our clinical team monitors your condition, manages symptoms, and adjusts treatment based on your individual needs.

When appropriate, we incorporate medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to help reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings. This approach can be particularly valuable for individuals recovering from opioid addiction or alcohol dependence. Our goal is to help you stabilize safely and prepare for continued residential addiction treatment.

What Happens During Opioid Detox?

Withdrawal from opioids can be physically and emotionally challenging, whether you’re recovering from heroin, fentanyl, or prescription opioid medications. Symptoms often begin within hours of the last dose, although the timing and severity depend on the substance, duration of use, and level of physical dependence.

Common opioid withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Muscle aches, joint pain, and spasms
  • Anxiety and restlessness
  • Irritability and mood changes
  • Insomnia and sleep disturbances
  • Depression and emotional distress
  • Runny nose and watery eyes
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Chills, sweating, and goosebumps
  • Intense opioid cravings

Although opioid withdrawal is rarely life-threatening on its own, severe dehydration and other complications can create serious health risks. The discomfort and intense cravings can also increase the likelihood of returning to substance use.

At Harmony Place, our medically supervised detox program helps manage withdrawal symptoms through individualized care, clinical monitoring, and appropriate medications. This structured support helps you stabilize while building a foundation for relapse prevention and continued residential treatment.

Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Symptoms

Benzodiazepines, commonly called benzos, are prescription medications used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and certain medical conditions. With continued use, the body can develop physical dependence, making withdrawal difficult when someone reduces or stops taking these medications. Drugs such as Xanax, Ativan, and Valium can cause withdrawal symptoms that vary in severity and duration.

Common benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Muscle spasms, stiffness, and tremors
  • Restlessness and irritability
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Insomnia and sleep disturbances
  • Excessive sweating and chills
  • Difficulty concentrating and mood changes
  • Seizures in severe cases

Benzodiazepine withdrawal can cause serious complications, including life-threatening seizures, particularly when someone stops taking these medications abruptly. Medical supervision is essential for individuals with physical dependence, and treatment may involve a carefully managed medication taper.

At Harmony Place, our clinical team evaluates your substance use history, monitors withdrawal symptoms, and develops an individualized detox plan. With appropriate medical care and ongoing support, we help you navigate benzodiazepine withdrawal safely and prepare for the next stage of residential addiction treatment.

What Are the Symptoms of Alcohol Withdrawal?

Alcohol withdrawal occurs when someone who has developed physical dependence reduces or stops drinking. Over time, prolonged alcohol use changes how the brain and nervous system function. When alcohol consumption suddenly stops, the body must adjust, potentially triggering uncomfortable or dangerous withdrawal symptoms.

Common alcohol withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Restlessness, anxiety, and irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating and confusion
  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Insomnia and sleep disturbances
  • Nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite
  • Excessive sweating and tremors
  • Rapid heart rate and elevated blood pressure
  • Fever and increased sensitivity to light or sound

Severe alcohol withdrawal can lead to seizures, hallucinations, and delirium tremens (DTs), a potentially life-threatening condition involving confusion and nervous system instability. Symptoms can begin within hours of the last drink, making medical supervision especially important for individuals with significant alcohol dependence.

At Harmony Place, our medically supervised alcohol withdrawal treatment provides clinical monitoring, appropriate medications, and individualized support. Our team helps manage withdrawal symptoms, reduce the risk of complications, and prepare you for continued residential addiction treatment.

What Are the Benefits of Medical Detox?

Medical detox provides a safer, more comfortable way to manage drug and alcohol withdrawal under professional supervision. At Harmony Place, our Los Angeles drug detox program combines individualized medical care, symptom management, and 24/7 nursing support to help you stabilize and prepare for continued addiction treatment.

Key benefits of medically supervised detox include:

Safe and Supervised Withdrawal

Withdrawal symptoms can change quickly, especially with alcohol, benzodiazepines, and certain other substances. Our clinical team monitors your physical and emotional health, identifies potential complications, and adjusts your treatment as needed. This structured approach provides greater safety and reassurance throughout the withdrawal process.

Medication-Assisted Withdrawal Management

Drug and alcohol withdrawal can cause anxiety, nausea, insomnia, muscle discomfort, and intense cravings. When clinically appropriate, our medical team uses medications to help manage these symptoms and reduce complications. Personalized withdrawal management makes the detox experience more comfortable while supporting your physical stabilization.

Support for Physical and Emotional Well-Being

Detox affects more than your physical health. Anxiety, depression, and emotional distress can become more noticeable during withdrawal. Our integrated approach addresses these concerns alongside your medical needs. We also offer supportive wellness amenities, including infrared sauna and red light therapy, when appropriate for your health and stage of recovery.

A Smooth Transition Into Residential Rehab

Medical detox is the beginning of recovery, rather than a complete addiction treatment program. Once you’re medically stable, our team helps you transition into structured residential treatment. This continuity allows you to build on your progress through individual therapy, group counseling, relapse prevention, and ongoing recovery support.

Is Medical Detox Treatment Right for You

Medical detox may be the right first step if you’re physically dependent on drugs or alcohol or concerned about withdrawal symptoms. At Harmony Place, our Los Angeles drug detox program provides personalized medical supervision and residential care based on your substance use history, physical health, and individual recovery needs.

Medically supervised detox may be especially beneficial if you:

  • Have experienced withdrawal symptoms when reducing or stopping substance use
  • Have developed physical dependence on alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, or prescription medications
  • Have previously attempted to stop using drugs or alcohol without professional support
  • Are withdrawing from multiple substances
  • Have a co-occurring mental health condition, such as anxiety, depression, or PTSD
  • Have medical conditions or take medications that could complicate withdrawal
  • Need a structured, supportive environment before beginning residential addiction treatment

Our clinical team evaluates your medical history, withdrawal risks, and treatment goals to determine the appropriate level of care. For individuals with complex medical needs, we can help identify whether a higher level of medical supervision is necessary before admission.

At Harmony Place, we help you move from medical detox into personalized residential treatment when clinically appropriate. Our admissions team can also review your insurance benefits, explain your options, and guide you through the next steps toward lasting recovery.

Infrared Sauna Detox & Red Light Therapy Benefits

At Harmony Place, our Clearlight® infrared sauna and red light therapy complement medically supervised drug and alcohol detox. Unlike medical withdrawal management, infrared sauna detox focuses on heat-based wellness and relaxation rather than removing drugs or alcohol from the body. This supportive therapy provides an additional way to promote comfort and well-being during residential addiction treatment.

Infrared Sauna Benefits During Residential Treatment

Infrared heat warms the body directly, creating a soothing experience that may support physical and emotional wellness. When clinically appropriate, infrared sauna and detox support may offer several benefits:

  • Promotes relaxation and helps reduce stress
  • May provide temporary relief from muscle aches and stiffness
  • Supports circulation through gentle heat exposure
  • Encourages rest and overall physical comfort
  • Provides a calming environment for relaxation and self-care

Combining Infrared Sauna and Red Light Therapy

Our Clearlight® system combines infrared heat with red and near-infrared light therapy for an integrated wellness experience. Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light that researchers continue to study for their potential effects on cellular function and tissue recovery. Together, these therapies offer a comfortable way to incorporate relaxation and wellness into residential treatment.

The Cleveland Clinic’s guide to infrared sauna benefits discusses potential advantages for relaxation, circulation, and muscle comfort. While sauna detox may complement your recovery experience, it does not replace medically supervised withdrawal care. Our clinical team determines when sauna sessions are appropriate based on your health, medical stability, and individual treatment needs.

THE RISKS OF HOME DETOX

Should I Detox from Drugs or Alcohol at Home?

Detoxing from drugs or alcohol at home may seem convenient, but withdrawal can create serious health risks without medical supervision. Depending on the substance and level of dependence, symptoms can include severe anxiety, dehydration, seizures, and other complications. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism emphasizes the importance of medical guidance during alcohol withdrawal.

Risks of Detoxing at Home

Home detox can make recovery more challenging because familiar surroundings and continued access to substances may increase the risk of relapse. Intense cravings and uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms can also become overwhelming without professional support. Choosing medically supervised detox provides a safer environment for managing these challenges.

OUR LOS ANGELES DETOX CENTER CAN HELP

Can Medical Detox Help You Stop Using Drugs or Alcohol?

Stopping drug or alcohol use can be challenging, especially when physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms make it difficult to quit. At Harmony Place, our Los Angeles drug detox program provides personalized medical supervision, withdrawal management, and ongoing clinical support to help you begin recovery safely.

For individuals with alcohol dependence, medical detox for alcoholism helps manage withdrawal symptoms and reduce the risk of serious complications. Similarly, opioid medical detox and benzodiazepine detox provide substance-specific care based on individual medical needs and withdrawal risks.

Other substances may require different approaches. For example, cocaine addiction detox often focuses on managing fatigue, cravings, sleep disturbances, and emotional changes. Because substance use and mental health conditions frequently overlap, our integrated treatment approach also addresses co-occurring concerns that may influence recovery.

Once you’re medically stable, our team helps you prepare for continued residential addiction treatment. This next stage builds on your progress through therapy, relapse prevention, and personalized recovery planning.

What Happens After Detox Treatment for Addiction?

Completing medical detox is an important first step toward recovery, but withdrawal management alone does not address the underlying causes of addiction. Once you’re medically stable, continued treatment helps you understand substance use patterns, develop healthier coping skills, and build a foundation for lasting recovery.

Transitioning From Detox to Residential Treatment

At Harmony Place, clients can transition from medical detox into our residential inpatient treatment program when clinically appropriate. This next stage provides structured support through individual counseling, group therapy, relapse prevention, and integrated mental health care. Our clinical team develops personalized treatment plans that address your physical, emotional, and behavioral health needs.

Building a Foundation for Long-Term Recovery

Recovery continues as you develop practical skills for managing cravings, emotional challenges, and everyday stress. Our Los Angeles drug detox and residential treatment services work together to provide continuity of care throughout your recovery journey. We also incorporate family involvement and individualized aftercare planning to help you prepare for life beyond residential treatment.

    • Absolutely the best recovery center around.

I am forever grateful to have had this experience. I would recommend anyone who wanted help to come here. This place literally saved my life. I have overcome so many obstacles that always stood in the way of my recovery. It’s not just because I was ready… the approaches the therapists use come from an empathetic, compassionate, and understanding place. They were able to hold the mirror up and help guide me through making solid changes.

    • This place literally saved my life.

After overdosing, my parents forced me to check into rehab. After interviewing many other facilities, I decided to go to Harmony Place from my home in Phoenix. I was struggling with…a drug addiction and had been trying for years to recover. In the past, left 2 treatment centers AMA and 1 AWOL. I had very negative experiences in the other treatment facilities, especially with my therapists, so I didn’t go in with an open mind or good attitude- even though they worked with my parents regarding finances. However, the staff was patient with me. The techs were kind, knowledgeable, and many were in recovery themselves.

      Mary M.
    • They Answered on the First Call

When I called Harmony Place…I knew immediately that this was the right place for my child… Harmony Place is specifically designed for…and tailored to providing a safe environment. The staff [are knowledgeable and some are in recovery]. The staff knew each client and were on top of each client’s progress. Harmony Place has a small clientele and each client are able to receive all the help they were entitled to. I would recommend Harmony Place to anyone who is looking for a small setting… My daughter is currently going into sober living and her counselors did a wonderful job in finding a right fit for her – affordable, safe and a good environment for her.

    • I’ve Been Searching for the Perfect Words…

I left Harmony Place in August of 2015 and I have been searching for the perfect words to describe my experience during my stay; and still I can’t really find them. How do you really describe a place with a staff and a program that saved you? Addiction is a terrible thing to go through and a heart breaking thing for your loved ones to watch. Many people, including myself go into different treatment centers throughout their addiction searching for ways to find recovery. Nothing worked for me, not the 5 rehab stays I had, then, I came here.

I’ve been to 4 treatment centers before Harmony Place, and I can tell you without a single doubt that this is the absolute best by FAR. The past ones were luxury Residential Treatment centers that just treated every single client the same not tailoring to each individual, and were basically just in it for the money, dropping the ball each time. I can also tell you that I’ve never met the CEOs, but here, David comes to the facility almost every single day, and makes sure he get to know every individual here. He is incredibly kind, and was even willing to transfer me to another facility with a higher level of trauma therapy due to me having a lifetime of trauma and PTSD that just is going to take a long time to tackle. He truly cares about all of the clients having all of the tools that we need before getting released to the real world. No more of other CEO would ever be willing to miss an opportunity at making more money and even paired with my IMPECCABLE case manager to find a different facility that was more trauma based. My case manager, Sam, goes absolutely above and beyond in every single aspect. She makes sure you have a smooth transition into aftercare, provides out of this world advice when it comes to sobriety, and takes the time out of her day to make sure that FMLA and short-term disability are completely taken care of during your stay. I’ve never met a case manager that could ever compare to Sam. Ever. I feel lucky to have met her, genuinely. Marissa, my therapist, is SO SWEET, actually listens to you, and provides advice and therapy tailored to each individual’s experience. She’s handled every mood I’ve been in, never judged me, and allowed me to feel safe enough to tell her things I’ve never told any person or therapist in my 29 years of life. I’ve been going to therapy for the past 15 years, and none of those therapists even come close to how amazing she is. I’ve been to 4 other treatment centers in my life and none even come close to Harmony Place. The facility is clean, organized, and high-end. I would recommend Harmony place to my family, friends, and anyone seeking treatment. I feel SO BLESSED to have landed in their hands. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE IN THE CLINICAL STAFF BEYOND WORDS. I love you guys ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. I feel more confident than ever in my Recovery.

Where to begin.. Harmony is a place that will forever be a part of my story as the first step in my recovery journey. I’m so grateful for this program. The staff is very friendly, and many of them understand what addiction is like, for they themselves have recovery stories of their own. They have an awesome team of therapists, group facilitators, nurses, RA technicians, medical and health professionals, a wonderful case manager for aftercare that cares deeply for your next steps; making sure you are set up for success. They have a wonderful admissions team (shoutout to Marielle who was so kind and understanding of my messed up situation). Everyone is very relatable and friendly. They invest heavily in the importance of diet and nutrition too - there’s a full time professional chef. I gained all the weight I lost and wanted back in the first two weeks lol. On top of the intensive programming they do throughout the day, they take us out to experience various kinds of outside groups to get a taste of the real world, and also take us on social outings during the weekend. If you’re serious about getting better this place will meet you where you’re at and prepare you to launch with a renewed mind and heart.

I can't begin to explain just how amazing Harmony Place is. In fact, when we sit down with the owner, Jeff, and clinical director, David, on Monday mornings to have a house meeting, they ask us what they could be doing better. A bigger blender for smoothies is the ONLY thing we could come up with. Let me begin by addressing some negative reviews. If you notice many of them are from people, or are referring to people who have been asked to leave. It is because of harmony places protection of their clients that provide ideal conditions for healing and progress. There is a screening process that it is implemented where they make sure the clients they admit are ready to start a life of sobriety. Some people slip through the cracks. Some people find out a few days or weeks in that they've changed their minds. Some are inappropriate and break rules. It happens. When Harmony Place ask people to leave, It's because they are protecting the people who are here that want treatment. In effect, they're providing exactly what I needed for a genuine start to recovery. When I began my search for a treatment center, my requirements were that the facility's provide an environment in which its residents all want to be there and that it is ethically ran. I got that and so much more at Harmony Place. As well as a structured routine, they also provide a confidential and nurturing environment where one feels safe and where profound healing can begin. Their program offers a sound foundation where further progress in sober living is almost guaranteed. In group meetings, we enjoy getting to know ourselves again and with deeper understanding about why we are the way we are. We are provided with skills to handle real life. Its here that I've come to understand that its not addiction that has driven me to make a mess of my life. It is the trauma that I endured and not processing it correctly that lead to poor thinking patterns that opened the door to addiction resulting in poor life management. So we start at the bottom. Trauma. They help us understand that trauma has led to our own toxicity, what that trauma looks like and how to get out of our own way. Process groups help us learn how to take accountability and foster healthier relationships. I learned here that changing the way I think is absolutely possible and imperative to the healing process. Harmony Place offered me hope when I previously felt I was unfixable and a support team that truly loves me. Even after I leave here, I have contacts that almost demand I keep in touch and an alumni meeting where I can return to the facility on Thursday nights. I wasn't a 12 stepper when I came here but my first experience with it was not one where I was ready to stop using. I understand now that the steps will work for me. It's certainly is not the only modality that they teach. In one group, we are provided an opportunity to sit with a recently retired medical doctor to just ask questions. Another is with a nutritionist. There are a handful of people IN recovery that come to lead groups that are all accredited highly specialized where I felt understood and not judged. The knowledge I have gained here is life changing. It is also versatile and relatable for all types of people. my favorite group was dialectical behavioral therapy. There are breathing classes and sound bath groups and I started doing yoga in the morning. There's a dharma meeting they take you offsite that focuses on Buddhist values. A fantastic onsight chef provides three meals and you can have special requests. We facilitated our own Movie nights during free time. I cant forget to mention you get your own one on one meetings with your assigned primary therapist and there is comprehensive medical support complete with 24/7 nurses and a doctor that shows up throughout the week. If this is what you need to recover and you have mediCAL, cancel your mediCAL and get insurance Harmony Place accepts if you can. There are people to help you with that as well. Just call. Many, many thanks to the staff. ✔️Another life changed.🙏
