Opium Effects

December 27, 2021
Harmony Place Team

Treatment for any sort of substance use disorder can come in many shapes and sizes. After all, there is no one-size-fits-all method for addiction treatment. For example, the treatment someone may need for a mild alcohol use disorder looks much different than the treatment someone may need for the opium effects that a person may feel due to suffering from severe opium addiction.

What Is Opium?

What is opium, you ask? Well, opium is a particular kind of drug that derives from the poppy plant. It is a depressant, which means that when taken, the messages the brain receives from the body are delayed.

Opium is one of the earliest known medicinal plants. The use of opium to treat people began sometime around 3000 BCE. The Sumerians used opium to treat pain. Just because this is the earliest record of opium for medicinal use though does not mean it’s the first time society has ever used it.

The opium plant is made up of a milky substance called latex. Latex possesses chemicals like morphine and codeine, making the plant an ideal candidate for pain relief. But how is opium made? In a nutshell, the latex is taken from the opium pods and dried, then boiled, and then dried again. Opium also has a strange, potent smell to it. It’s a sticky, brown gum that can be made into a liquid or a powder.

When it comes to how opium is used, the substance is pretty versatile. It can be smoked, eaten, swallowed as a pill, or used as tincture oil. It can also be made into heroin, fentanyl, or other substances.

Does Opium Have Other Names?

There are many names for opium, some of which include the following:

  • Aunty
  • Aunti Emma
  • Chandu
  • Black Pill
  • Chinese Molasses
  • Big O
  • O
  • Dream Gun
  • Midnight Oil
  • Zero

Some different kinds of dangerous opioids also exist. These include the following:

  • Codeine
  • Fentanyl
  • Heroin
  • Naloxone
  • Oxycodone
  • Methadone

What Does Opium Do to You?

No matter the substance, drugs affect whoever takes them. Whether it’s a small or large impact, there is not a safe way to abuse drugs. This is why, when taking any kind of prescription, it is imperative to monitor how you feel while you’re on it. Some effects of opium include the following:

  • Euphoria
  • Painlessness
  • Numbness
  • Relaxation
  • Slowed breathing
  • Impaired motor coordination
  • Constipation
  • Loss of appetite

The effects of opium are dependent on a variety of factors. Some of these factors include weight, BMI, overall health, and others. Some alternative factors include the following:

  • Frequency of use
  • Presence of other drugs
  • The volume of the drug taken
  • The strength of the batch consumed

Dangerous Opium Effects

When it comes to opium effects, there are many dangers to consider. For example, in some cases, opium has been known to slow down a person’s breathing. This could cause a person to go unconscious or even die (if the dose is bigger).

Other opium effects may include nausea, numbness, loss of appetite, constipation, and dryness of the mouth or nose. When someone uses opium with another substance like alcohol, benzos, or anesthetics, they are at risk of developing life-threatening respiratory depression.

As far as becoming addicted to opium is concerned, if someone uses opium even a few times, it can lead to tolerance. When someone becomes tolerant of any drug, he or she needs more of it to experience the high of its first use. Over time, this compromises the pleasure center of the brain, causing a person’s reward system to become distorted. After a while, if the body isn’t achieving the high it received before and more opium is taken, the chance of overdose becomes more and more likely.

Opium Overdose

Using a vast amount of opium could cause a person to overdose and die. If this happens, it is imperative to call an ambulance immediately. Fear of getting involved with the police should never be a concern when your life or the life of a loved one is at stake.

If a person neglects to get help for an opium overdose, he or she could die or suffer from long-term brain damage if they survive.

When someone combines multiple substances at one time, the likelihood of an overdose increases. Some people will take opium with a stimulant like cocaine. This will send contradicting signals to the body (because opium is a depressant). This can also put a massive strain on the body (specifically the heart).

Mixing opium with stimulants such as cocaine may even cause adverse opium effects, like not getting the high someone wants. Such adverse opium effects increase the risk of overdose.

How Can You Tell If Someone Has Overdosed?

When someone overdoses on any drug, it is a scary circumstance to encounter. How can you be sure if someone is experiencing an opium overdose? You don’t want to over-react, but you’re not sure if they’re overdosing.

There is no such thing as being too careful when it comes to drug overdose, especially with opium. Some symptoms of opium overdose include the following:

  • Slowed breathing
  • Unconsciousness
  • Shrunken pupils

What is the Long-Term Impact of Opium Abuse?

As with any substance, repeated long-term abuse of opium has a massive impact on one’s quality of life. Some effects of long-term opium use include the following:

  • Withdrawal symptoms
  • Tolerance
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Constipation
  • Dependence
  • Sporadic periods
  • Difficulty conceiving

What Does Opium Withdrawal Look Like?

Using opium for a prolonged period of time can lead to massive withdrawal symptoms. As with any drug, the body of a person that consistently abuses opium has to adjust to being without the substance. This is because, when the body becomes dependent on a certain amount of a substance to function correctly, withdrawal follows shortly behind it. To make matters worse, the withdrawal symptoms from opium are similar to that of opioids.

Opium withdrawal symptoms begin as early as six hours after someone has taken his or her last dose of opium. What’s worse is that the withdrawal period lasts anywhere from seven to ten days. Opium withdrawal symptoms include the following:

  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Sweating
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Muscle soreness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Intense heart palpitations

Other Dangers of Opium Use

Opium has also been known to contain lead in some cases. Where it comes from is unknown, but it could derive from the process of opium being broken down. The equipment used to process opium could be the culprit, as well as someone intentionally lacing it with lead, or contaminating soil the plant has already grown in. This can have some extreme results such as organ damage or failure.

How Do I Get Help for Opium Addiction?

Addiction is not an easy road to walk down by any stretch of the imagination. Taking the first step, however, is an important one. In fact, that’s worth celebrating; it’s progress.

There are many opium addiction treatment options. Some of these options include the following:

  • Inpatient Treatment
  • Outpatient Treatment
  • Medically Assisted Treatment

Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient residential treatment is when an individual suffering from a more severe case of addiction stays overnight at a treatment facility while receiving care. This method of care ranges anywhere from 28 days to over six months depending on the severity of one’s condition.

People in inpatient addiction treatment participate in weekly, sometimes daily, therapy (whether it be in a group, individually, or with family). A person in inpatient addiction treatment may fulfill his or her treatment requirements throughout the day and then shortly after enjoy the amenities of the rehab facility that he or she is receiving addiction treatment at.

Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient addiction treatment is the precise opposite of inpatient rehab. For example, inpatient recovery is for those who suffer from more severe forms of a substance use or co-occurring disorders, while outpatient treatment is meant for those who suffer from milder forms of substance use or co-occurring disorders.

People who participate in outpatient care attend therapy anywhere from 10-12 hours throughout the week. Such treatment allows for an individual to achieve recovery while also managing the responsibilities of everyday life.

Medically Assisted Treatment

Drug withdrawal is a hard part of recovery. This, however, doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to make it bearable. When a person wants to quit abusing substances but suffers from drug withdrawal, it’s difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel. This is why medically-assisted detox exists.

Medically assisted detox programs provide individuals with the medicine that they need to curb the symptoms of withdrawal. This allows individuals to be weaned off of drugs comfortably and successfully.

I’ve been to 4 treatment centers before Harmony Place, and I can tell you without a single doubt that this is the absolute best by FAR. The past ones were luxury Residential Treatment centers that just treated every single client the same not tailoring to each individual, and were basically just in it for the money, dropping the ball each time. I can also tell you that I’ve never met the CEOs, but here, David comes to the facility almost every single day, and makes sure he get to know every individual here. He is incredibly kind, and was even willing to transfer me to another facility with a higher level of trauma therapy due to me having a lifetime of trauma and PTSD that just is going to take a long time to tackle. He truly cares about all of the clients having all of the tools that we need before getting released to the real world. No more of other CEO would ever be willing to miss an opportunity at making more money and even paired with my IMPECCABLE case manager to find a different facility that was more trauma based. My case manager, Sam, goes absolutely above and beyond in every single aspect. She makes sure you have a smooth transition into aftercare, provides out of this world advice when it comes to sobriety, and takes the time out of her day to make sure that FMLA and short-term disability are completely taken care of during your stay. I’ve never met a case manager that could ever compare to Sam. Ever. I feel lucky to have met her, genuinely. Marissa, my therapist, is SO SWEET, actually listens to you, and provides advice and therapy tailored to each individual’s experience. She’s handled every mood I’ve been in, never judged me, and allowed me to feel safe enough to tell her things I’ve never told any person or therapist in my 29 years of life. I’ve been going to therapy for the past 15 years, and none of those therapists even come close to how amazing she is. I’ve been to 4 other treatment centers in my life and none even come close to Harmony Place. The facility is clean, organized, and high-end. I would recommend Harmony place to my family, friends, and anyone seeking treatment. I feel SO BLESSED to have landed in their hands. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE IN THE CLINICAL STAFF BEYOND WORDS. I love you guys ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. I feel more confident than ever in my Recovery.

Where to begin.. Harmony is a place that will forever be a part of my story as the first step in my recovery journey. I’m so grateful for this program. The staff is very friendly, and many of them understand what addiction is like, for they themselves have recovery stories of their own. They have an awesome team of therapists, group facilitators, nurses, RA technicians, medical and health professionals, a wonderful case manager for aftercare that cares deeply for your next steps; making sure you are set up for success. They have a wonderful admissions team (shoutout to Marielle who was so kind and understanding of my messed up situation). Everyone is very relatable and friendly. They invest heavily in the importance of diet and nutrition too - there’s a full time professional chef. I gained all the weight I lost and wanted back in the first two weeks lol. On top of the intensive programming they do throughout the day, they take us out to experience various kinds of outside groups to get a taste of the real world, and also take us on social outings during the weekend. If you’re serious about getting better this place will meet you where you’re at and prepare you to launch with a renewed mind and heart.

I can't begin to explain just how amazing Harmony Place is. In fact, when we sit down with the owner, Jeff, and clinical director, David, on Monday mornings to have a house meeting, they ask us what they could be doing better. A bigger blender for smoothies is the ONLY thing we could come up with. Let me begin by addressing some negative reviews. If you notice many of them are from people, or are referring to people who have been asked to leave. It is because of harmony places protection of their clients that provide ideal conditions for healing and progress. There is a screening process that it is implemented where they make sure the clients they admit are ready to start a life of sobriety. Some people slip through the cracks. Some people find out a few days or weeks in that they've changed their minds. Some are inappropriate and break rules. It happens. When Harmony Place ask people to leave, It's because they are protecting the people who are here that want treatment. In effect, they're providing exactly what I needed for a genuine start to recovery. When I began my search for a treatment center, my requirements were that the facility's provide an environment in which its residents all want to be there and that it is ethically ran. I got that and so much more at Harmony Place. As well as a structured routine, they also provide a confidential and nurturing environment where one feels safe and where profound healing can begin. Their program offers a sound foundation where further progress in sober living is almost guaranteed. In group meetings, we enjoy getting to know ourselves again and with deeper understanding about why we are the way we are. We are provided with skills to handle real life. Its here that I've come to understand that its not addiction that has driven me to make a mess of my life. It is the trauma that I endured and not processing it correctly that lead to poor thinking patterns that opened the door to addiction resulting in poor life management. So we start at the bottom. Trauma. They help us understand that trauma has led to our own toxicity, what that trauma looks like and how to get out of our own way. Process groups help us learn how to take accountability and foster healthier relationships. I learned here that changing the way I think is absolutely possible and imperative to the healing process. Harmony Place offered me hope when I previously felt I was unfixable and a support team that truly loves me. Even after I leave here, I have contacts that almost demand I keep in touch and an alumni meeting where I can return to the facility on Thursday nights. I wasn't a 12 stepper when I came here but my first experience with it was not one where I was ready to stop using. I understand now that the steps will work for me. It's certainly is not the only modality that they teach. In one group, we are provided an opportunity to sit with a recently retired medical doctor to just ask questions. Another is with a nutritionist. There are a handful of people IN recovery that come to lead groups that are all accredited highly specialized where I felt understood and not judged. The knowledge I have gained here is life changing. It is also versatile and relatable for all types of people. my favorite group was dialectical behavioral therapy. There are breathing classes and sound bath groups and I started doing yoga in the morning. There's a dharma meeting they take you offsite that focuses on Buddhist values. A fantastic onsight chef provides three meals and you can have special requests. We facilitated our own Movie nights during free time. I cant forget to mention you get your own one on one meetings with your assigned primary therapist and there is comprehensive medical support complete with 24/7 nurses and a doctor that shows up throughout the week. If this is what you need to recover and you have mediCAL, cancel your mediCAL and get insurance Harmony Place accepts if you can. There are people to help you with that as well. Just call. Many, many thanks to the staff. ✔️Another life changed.🙏
