Questions to Ask When Choosing a Drug or Alcohol Rehab

July 1, 2026
Harmony Place Team

Choosing a drug or alcohol rehab center can feel overwhelming. You may be making decisions during a stressful time while trying to compare programs, costs, locations, and treatment approaches. Asking clear questions can help you determine whether a center is safe, qualified, and suited to your needs.

No single program is right for everyone. Effective treatment should reflect your substance use, physical health, mental health, living situation, relationships, and recovery goals. A professional assessment can help determine the level of care that may be appropriate.

Do not base your decision only on photographs, amenities, promises, or location. Look closely at clinical services, staff qualifications, safety procedures, and planning for life after treatment. The answers should be specific, understandable, and provided without pressure.

Is the Rehab Center Licensed and Accredited?

Start by asking whether the treatment center holds all licenses required by its state. Licensing confirms that the organization has met basic operating requirements. You can also ask which government agency regulates the program and how to verify its current status.

Accreditation is a separate form of review conducted by an independent organization. It may indicate that a program has been evaluated against standards involving safety, leadership, treatment, staffing, and quality improvement. Ask which services and locations are covered by the accreditation.

Useful questions include:

  • Which state licenses does the center currently hold?
  • Which organization accredited the program?
  • When was the most recent accreditation review?
  • Does accreditation cover this location and level of care?
  • How can I verify the license or accreditation?

Licensing and accreditation are important, but neither guarantees a specific result. They should be considered alongside clinical quality, staff experience, individualized care, and honest communication.

Does the Center Provide an Individual Assessment?

A reputable rehab center should not recommend treatment solely from a brief sales call. Before admission, qualified professionals should gather enough information to understand your health, substance use, risks, and current circumstances. A more complete clinical evaluation may continue after arrival.

The assessment may consider:

  • Substances used and patterns of use
  • Past withdrawal symptoms
  • Overdose history
  • Physical health conditions
  • Current medications
  • Mental health symptoms
  • Previous treatment experiences
  • Family and relationship concerns
  • Housing and recovery environment
  • Safety risks and immediate needs

Ask who completes the assessment and which credentials that person holds. You should also ask what happens if the program determines that another level of care would be safer or more appropriate.

How Is the Treatment Plan Personalized?

Treatment should not follow an identical plan for every client. People enter rehab with different histories, symptoms, strengths, responsibilities, and goals. An individualized plan should identify specific needs and explain how the program intends to address them.

Ask how treatment plans are created, reviewed, and updated. Progress, new symptoms, medication changes, or family concerns may require adjustments. A plan developed at admission should not remain unchanged simply because it was created first.

Questions to ask include:

  • Who helps create my treatment plan?
  • Will I participate in setting treatment goals?
  • How often will the clinical team review my progress?
  • What happens if an approach is not helping?
  • Can the plan change as my needs change?
  • How are discharge goals included from the beginning?

Personalized care does not mean every preference will be clinically appropriate. It means recommendations should be based on an assessment and explained clearly.

What Level of Care Does the Center Provide?

Addiction treatment is available at different levels of intensity. These may include medically managed withdrawal services, residential care, outpatient services, and continuing support. Harmony Place provides treatment in a private residential setting and should not be described as an outpatient provider.

Ask the center to explain the level of care it provides and why that level matches your needs. A program should also explain what it cannot safely treat.

Consider asking:

  • Is this residential, outpatient, or hospital-based care?
  • Who is appropriate for this level of treatment?
  • Who may need a different level of care?
  • How many clinical hours are provided each week?
  • How is care coordinated with outside medical providers?
  • What happens if my needs become more intensive?

You can also review the center’s description of its residential treatment setting before admission. The written description should match what the admissions team tells you.

Does the Program Offer Medical Detox?

Detox is not required for every person entering addiction treatment. Whether it is needed depends on the substance, amount used, frequency, health history, withdrawal risk, and other clinical factors. A qualified medical assessment should guide that decision.

Withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines, and certain other substances can become medically dangerous. Opioid withdrawal may also require professional support, especially when other health or overdose risks are present. Do not attempt to manage potentially severe withdrawal without medical guidance.

Ask:

  • Does the center provide medical detox at this location?
  • Who determines whether detox is needed?
  • Are medical professionals available during detox?
  • How are withdrawal symptoms monitored?
  • What happens during a medical emergency?
  • Will I transfer directly into residential care afterward?

Some residential centers coordinate detox through another provider. Ask how transportation, records, medications, and the transition into continued treatment will be managed.

Who Provides the Clinical and Medical Care?

Job titles can sound impressive without explaining a person’s qualifications. Ask which professionals will provide therapy, medical care, medication management, case coordination, and daily support. Confirm whether clinicians are licensed, supervised, or working toward licensure.

Relevant team members may include:

  • Physicians
  • Nurses
  • Psychiatrists
  • Psychologists
  • Licensed therapists
  • Addiction counselors
  • Case managers
  • Behavioral health technicians

Ask how often you will meet with each provider. A center may advertise access to a physician or psychiatrist, but actual appointment frequency can vary. Find out which professionals are on-site and which are available through scheduled visits or telehealth.

Is Medical Support Available Around the Clock?

Twenty-four-hour residential supervision is not always the same as continuous access to a physician or nurse. Ask the center to describe exactly who is present overnight and how medical concerns are handled.

Questions should include:

  • Which staff members remain on-site overnight?
  • Is a nurse present at all times?
  • How quickly can a physician be contacted?
  • How are medications stored and administered?
  • What happens after a fall, injury, or severe symptom?
  • Which hospital receives clients during emergencies?

The appropriate level of medical availability depends on the services provided and the clients served. The center should answer these questions accurately rather than using broad phrases such as “medical support is always available.”

Which Therapies Does the Program Use?

A treatment center should be able to name its therapeutic approaches and explain how they support recovery. The number of therapies listed on a website matters less than how carefully they are selected and delivered.

Evidence-based treatment may include individual therapy, group therapy, family work, motivational approaches, relapse prevention, and behavioral therapies. Not every client needs every method. Recommendations should depend on clinical needs and treatment goals.

Ask:

  • Which therapies form the core of the program?
  • How often will I receive individual therapy?
  • How large are therapy groups?
  • Who leads each group?
  • How are therapies selected for each client?
  • How does the program respond when a method is not effective?

The SAMHSA quality checklist recommends looking for licensed care, qualified professionals, evidence-based treatment, individualized planning, family involvement, and continued support after treatment.

How Does the Center Treat Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditions?

Substance use disorders and mental health conditions can occur together. They may influence one another, but it is not always possible to say that one directly caused the other. Effective care should consider both without reducing every symptom to addiction.

Ask whether the center can evaluate and treat co-occurring disorders. You should also ask which diagnoses, symptoms, and levels of severity the program can safely manage.

Important questions include:

  • Is a mental health assessment part of admission?
  • Is psychiatric care available?
  • How often are psychiatric appointments offered?
  • Who manages existing psychiatric medications?
  • How does the team respond to worsening symptoms?
  • Which conditions require referral to another provider?

A center should not promise that sobriety will resolve every mental health concern. Coordinated care may be needed during treatment and after discharge.

Does the Program Offer Medication Management?

Some clients enter treatment with prescriptions for physical or mental health conditions. Others may benefit from medication used in addiction treatment. Ask how the center evaluates, stores, dispenses, and monitors medications.

Questions may include:

  • Who reviews my current prescriptions?
  • Can I continue necessary medications?
  • Who can prescribe or change medication?
  • How are side effects monitored?
  • Does the center use medications for addiction treatment?
  • How are medications coordinated after discharge?

Medication decisions should be made by qualified prescribers. A center should not require every client to follow the same medication approach.

How Does the Program Respond to Relapse Risk?

Relapse prevention should begin before discharge. Ask how the program teaches clients to identify triggers, respond to cravings, and recognize early warning signs. The center should also have a clear policy for substance use during treatment.

Ask:

  • When does relapse prevention planning begin?
  • Will I leave with a written prevention plan?
  • How are high-risk situations addressed in therapy?
  • What happens if a client uses during treatment?
  • Does the program automatically discharge clients after substance use?
  • How are overdose risks discussed?

The answer should balance accountability, safety, and clinical judgment. A return to use is serious, but shame and punishment alone do not provide effective treatment.

How Does the Center Involve Family?

Addiction can affect the entire family. When safe and appropriate, family involvement may support communication, education, boundaries, and recovery planning. However, participation should not be required when contact would create risk or harm.

Ask:

  • Is family therapy available?
  • Who is eligible to participate?
  • Are sessions offered in person or remotely?
  • Does the program provide family education?
  • How are privacy and consent handled?
  • Can family members receive support for themselves?

Family involvement does not guarantee recovery. Loved ones are also not responsible for keeping another person sober. A strong program should help families provide healthy support without taking control of treatment.

What Is the Daily Schedule?

A clear daily routine can provide stability and help clients remain engaged. Ask for a sample schedule rather than accepting broad statements about “full days of treatment.” The schedule should distinguish clinical services from recreation, meals, and unstructured time.

Look for information about:

  • Individual therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Medical or psychiatric appointments
  • Recovery education
  • Meals and personal care
  • Physical activity
  • Rest and reflection
  • Visitation or family sessions
  • Evening and weekend programming

Structure matters, but a schedule should still allow adjustments for medical appointments and individual treatment needs.

What Is the Residential Environment Like?

The setting should be safe, clean, calm, and appropriate for focused treatment. Comfortable accommodations can support rest and privacy, but they should never replace clinical quality. Ask to see current photographs or tour the residence when possible.

Questions to consider include:

  • How many clients live at the residence?
  • Are rooms shared or private?
  • How many clients share each bathroom?
  • How are meals prepared?
  • Can dietary needs be accommodated?
  • How are valuables secured?
  • What supervision is provided?
  • How does the center protect client privacy?

Ask whether treatment services and housing are provided at the same location. Some programs use separate clinical and residential properties, which may affect transportation and daily routines.

What Are the Rules for Phones, Laptops, and Visitors?

Communication policies differ among residential programs. Some centers limit devices during early treatment. Others provide scheduled access based on clinical progress and privacy concerns.

Ask for written policies covering:

  • Mobile phones
  • Laptops and tablets
  • Remote work
  • Social media
  • Personal mail
  • Visitors
  • Approved contacts
  • Photography and recording

Understand these rules before arrival. A policy that supports treatment may still allow reasonable communication with family, attorneys, employers, or medical providers when appropriate.

How Long Does Treatment Last?

Be cautious when a program promises that every person will complete treatment within the same number of days. Recovery does not follow one fixed timeline. Length of stay should depend on clinical needs, progress, safety, insurance decisions, and discharge planning.

Ask:

  • How is the recommended length determined?
  • How often is continued stay reviewed?
  • Can treatment be extended when clinically appropriate?
  • What happens if insurance stops authorizing care?
  • Can someone leave earlier than recommended?
  • How does discharge planning change with a shorter stay?

Longer treatment is not automatically better for everyone. The quality, intensity, and continuity of care also matter.

How Are Progress and Outcomes Evaluated?

A center should track more than attendance or program completion. Ask how clinicians evaluate symptoms, participation, coping skills, safety, treatment goals, and readiness for the next level of care.

Questions may include:

  • How will my progress be discussed with me?
  • Which clinical measures are used?
  • How often does the treatment team meet?
  • How are goals revised?
  • How does the program define successful completion?
  • Does the center track outcomes after discharge?

Be cautious of guaranteed success rates. Recovery outcomes depend on many factors, and ethical providers should explain both the limits and methods behind any statistics they publish.

What Happens If the Program Cannot Meet My Needs?

A responsible center should recognize the limits of its services. Ask what happens if you develop severe withdrawal, an acute medical condition, worsening psychiatric symptoms, or another need beyond the center’s capabilities.

The program should be able to explain:

  • Criteria for hospital transfer
  • Relationships with local medical providers
  • Emergency transportation procedures
  • How records are transferred
  • Whether family or emergency contacts are notified
  • How clients return after stabilization

Promises to treat every possible condition may indicate that a center is not evaluating its limitations honestly.

How Does the Rehab Protect Privacy?

Privacy is especially important when treatment involves sensitive health, family, or professional information. Ask how the center protects records, conversations, personal belongings, and your identity.

Questions should cover:

  • Who can access treatment records?
  • How is consent obtained before sharing information?
  • How is privacy protected during group therapy?
  • Are staff members trained in confidentiality?
  • How are visitors managed?
  • Can the center communicate discreetly with employers or family?

No program can guarantee that another client will never violate a group rule. The center should still have clear confidentiality expectations and procedures for addressing concerns.

What Does Treatment Cost?

Ask for a clear explanation of expected charges before admission. Treatment costs may depend on the level of care, length of stay, insurance coverage, medications, laboratory work, and professional services.

Request answers to these questions:

  • What is included in the quoted price?
  • Are medical services billed separately?
  • Are medications and laboratory tests included?
  • Are there additional fees for transportation?
  • What deposit is required?
  • What is the refund or cancellation policy?
  • Are payment plans available?
  • Will I receive the terms in writing?

A center should not pressure you to make an immediate payment without explaining the services, financial terms, and cancellation policies.

How Does Insurance Verification Work?

Insurance may cover part of addiction treatment when the care is medically necessary and covered under the policy. Benefits differ by plan. Verification provides useful information, but it is not a guarantee that the insurer will pay every charge.

Ask:

  • Is the center in-network with my plan?
  • What deductible remains?
  • What coinsurance or copayment may apply?
  • Is prior authorization required?
  • Who communicates with the insurer?
  • What happens after a denial?
  • Could I receive a balance bill?
  • Can I receive the verification details in writing?

You may also call your insurer directly. Compare its explanation with the information provided by the treatment center.

How Does the Admissions Process Work?

Ask what will happen between your first call and arrival. A clear process can reduce uncertainty and help you prepare for treatment. The center should explain assessments, paperwork, transportation, packing, medications, and arrival procedures.

Review the program’s admissions process and ask:

  • Who will complete my initial screening?
  • Which records are required?
  • What should I bring?
  • Which items are prohibited?
  • How should medications be packed?
  • Is transportation available?
  • What happens during the first day?
  • When will I receive my full clinical evaluation?

Admissions staff should provide factual guidance without using fear, shame, or unrealistic promises.

What Support Is Available After Residential Treatment?

Recovery continues after a residential stay ends. Discharge planning should begin early enough to arrange therapy, medical care, medication, housing, peer support, and other needed services.

Ask:

  • When does discharge planning begin?
  • Will I receive a written continuing care plan?
  • Who schedules follow-up appointments?
  • How are medications coordinated?
  • Does the team communicate with outside providers?
  • Are family members included when appropriate?
  • What happens if I need more support after discharge?
  • Can former clients contact the program for guidance?

Continuing care should reflect your needs and location. A referral list alone may not provide enough support when appointments, medications, or housing still need coordination.

Are There Any Warning Signs to Watch For?

Pay attention to how a treatment center answers questions. Reliable providers should be transparent about their services, qualifications, costs, and limitations. They should allow time for careful decisions unless an immediate medical risk requires urgent action.

Potential warning signs include:

  • Guaranteed recovery or success claims
  • Pressure to pay immediately
  • Refusal to provide licensing information
  • Vague answers about staff credentials
  • Claims that one program works for everyone
  • Unclear billing or refund policies
  • Promises to treat conditions beyond the center’s capabilities
  • Transportation offers that are not clearly explained
  • Little or no clinical assessment before admission
  • More emphasis on amenities than treatment

Trustworthy treatment centers should welcome informed questions. Clear answers help you compare programs and make a more confident decision.

I’ve been to 4 treatment centers before Harmony Place, and I can tell you without a single doubt that this is the absolute best by FAR. The past ones were luxury Residential Treatment centers that just treated every single client the same not tailoring to each individual, and were basically just in it for the money, dropping the ball each time. I can also tell you that I’ve never met the CEOs, but here, David comes to the facility almost every single day, and makes sure he get to know every individual here. He is incredibly kind, and was even willing to transfer me to another facility with a higher level of trauma therapy due to me having a lifetime of trauma and PTSD that just is going to take a long time to tackle. He truly cares about all of the clients having all of the tools that we need before getting released to the real world. No more of other CEO would ever be willing to miss an opportunity at making more money and even paired with my IMPECCABLE case manager to find a different facility that was more trauma based. My case manager, Sam, goes absolutely above and beyond in every single aspect. She makes sure you have a smooth transition into aftercare, provides out of this world advice when it comes to sobriety, and takes the time out of her day to make sure that FMLA and short-term disability are completely taken care of during your stay. I’ve never met a case manager that could ever compare to Sam. Ever. I feel lucky to have met her, genuinely. Marissa, my therapist, is SO SWEET, actually listens to you, and provides advice and therapy tailored to each individual’s experience. She’s handled every mood I’ve been in, never judged me, and allowed me to feel safe enough to tell her things I’ve never told any person or therapist in my 29 years of life. I’ve been going to therapy for the past 15 years, and none of those therapists even come close to how amazing she is. I’ve been to 4 other treatment centers in my life and none even come close to Harmony Place. The facility is clean, organized, and high-end. I would recommend Harmony place to my family, friends, and anyone seeking treatment. I feel SO BLESSED to have landed in their hands. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE IN THE CLINICAL STAFF BEYOND WORDS. I love you guys ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. I feel more confident than ever in my Recovery.

Where to begin.. Harmony is a place that will forever be a part of my story as the first step in my recovery journey. I’m so grateful for this program. The staff is very friendly, and many of them understand what addiction is like, for they themselves have recovery stories of their own. They have an awesome team of therapists, group facilitators, nurses, RA technicians, medical and health professionals, a wonderful case manager for aftercare that cares deeply for your next steps; making sure you are set up for success. They have a wonderful admissions team (shoutout to Marielle who was so kind and understanding of my messed up situation). Everyone is very relatable and friendly. They invest heavily in the importance of diet and nutrition too - there’s a full time professional chef. I gained all the weight I lost and wanted back in the first two weeks lol. On top of the intensive programming they do throughout the day, they take us out to experience various kinds of outside groups to get a taste of the real world, and also take us on social outings during the weekend. If you’re serious about getting better this place will meet you where you’re at and prepare you to launch with a renewed mind and heart.

I can't begin to explain just how amazing Harmony Place is. In fact, when we sit down with the owner, Jeff, and clinical director, David, on Monday mornings to have a house meeting, they ask us what they could be doing better. A bigger blender for smoothies is the ONLY thing we could come up with. Let me begin by addressing some negative reviews. If you notice many of them are from people, or are referring to people who have been asked to leave. It is because of harmony places protection of their clients that provide ideal conditions for healing and progress. There is a screening process that it is implemented where they make sure the clients they admit are ready to start a life of sobriety. Some people slip through the cracks. Some people find out a few days or weeks in that they've changed their minds. Some are inappropriate and break rules. It happens. When Harmony Place ask people to leave, It's because they are protecting the people who are here that want treatment. In effect, they're providing exactly what I needed for a genuine start to recovery. When I began my search for a treatment center, my requirements were that the facility's provide an environment in which its residents all want to be there and that it is ethically ran. I got that and so much more at Harmony Place. As well as a structured routine, they also provide a confidential and nurturing environment where one feels safe and where profound healing can begin. Their program offers a sound foundation where further progress in sober living is almost guaranteed. In group meetings, we enjoy getting to know ourselves again and with deeper understanding about why we are the way we are. We are provided with skills to handle real life. Its here that I've come to understand that its not addiction that has driven me to make a mess of my life. It is the trauma that I endured and not processing it correctly that lead to poor thinking patterns that opened the door to addiction resulting in poor life management. So we start at the bottom. Trauma. They help us understand that trauma has led to our own toxicity, what that trauma looks like and how to get out of our own way. Process groups help us learn how to take accountability and foster healthier relationships. I learned here that changing the way I think is absolutely possible and imperative to the healing process. Harmony Place offered me hope when I previously felt I was unfixable and a support team that truly loves me. Even after I leave here, I have contacts that almost demand I keep in touch and an alumni meeting where I can return to the facility on Thursday nights. I wasn't a 12 stepper when I came here but my first experience with it was not one where I was ready to stop using. I understand now that the steps will work for me. It's certainly is not the only modality that they teach. In one group, we are provided an opportunity to sit with a recently retired medical doctor to just ask questions. Another is with a nutritionist. There are a handful of people IN recovery that come to lead groups that are all accredited highly specialized where I felt understood and not judged. The knowledge I have gained here is life changing. It is also versatile and relatable for all types of people. my favorite group was dialectical behavioral therapy. There are breathing classes and sound bath groups and I started doing yoga in the morning. There's a dharma meeting they take you offsite that focuses on Buddhist values. A fantastic onsight chef provides three meals and you can have special requests. We facilitated our own Movie nights during free time. I cant forget to mention you get your own one on one meetings with your assigned primary therapist and there is comprehensive medical support complete with 24/7 nurses and a doctor that shows up throughout the week. If this is what you need to recover and you have mediCAL, cancel your mediCAL and get insurance Harmony Place accepts if you can. There are people to help you with that as well. Just call. Many, many thanks to the staff. ✔️Another life changed.🙏
