Do Drugs & Alcohol Cause High Blood Pressure?

January 11, 2022
Harmony Place Team

What is High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure is called hypertension. Hypertension is a common condition in which the long-term pressure of the blood against the walls of your arteries is high enough that it could cause health problems eventually. Hypertension is determined by both the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to the blood flow in your arteries. Therefore, the more blood your heart pumps + the narrower your arteries = the higher your chances of blood pressure. Because drugs and alcohol can impact one’s heart health and blood flow, drugs, alcohol and high blood pressure often go hand in hand.

Does Drugs & Alcohol Cause High Blood Pressure?

Yes, excessive alcohol consumption and the use of certain drugs can increase blood pressure. Heavy drinking can temporarily raise blood pressure and, over time, lead to chronic hypertension. Similarly, stimulant drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine, and some prescription medications can cause significant spikes in blood pressure, increasing the risk of cardiovascular complications.

Drug-Induced Hypertension

Drug-induced hypertension is a type of secondary hypertension caused by a medication or a chemical substance. Secondary hypertension happens because of another disorder or it is drug-induced as a response to a chemical substance or medicine.

Chemical substances and medications that can cause hypertension include:

  • Acetaminophen
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Testosterone
  • Antidepressants
  • Phentermine (a weight loss medication)
  • Stimulants such as Ritalin and Concerta

What Illegal Drugs Can Cause High Blood Pressure and Hypertension ?

Illegal drugs can raise your blood pressure (BP) by narrowing the arteries that supply blood to your heart. This increases your heart rate and causes damage to the heart muscle.

  • Amphetamines, including methamphetamine
  • Anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs
  • Cocaine
  • MDMA and its derivatives, including ecstasy

For adolescents and young adults, issues with drugs alcohol and high blood pressure are important health issues. When they present with high BP and other cardiovascular conditions, illicit drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, amphetamines, and meth are potential causes of acute or newly diagnosed high blood pressure.

Long Term Effects of Hypertension From Substance Use

Long-term hypertension caused by substance use can have serious and lasting effects on the body. Chronic high blood pressure damages the arteries, making them less elastic and increasing the risk of atherosclerosis, which can lead to heart disease. Over time, the heart must work harder to pump blood, which can result in an enlarged heart, heart failure, or an increased risk of heart attack.

Hypertension also affects the brain, increasing the risk of stroke, cognitive decline, and vascular dementia. The kidneys are particularly vulnerable, as sustained high blood pressure can impair kidney function, potentially leading to chronic kidney disease or kidney failure. Substance-induced hypertension can also exacerbate other health conditions, such as diabetes or sleep apnea, and contribute to overall reduced life expectancy.

In addition to physical health risks, prolonged high blood pressure can increase stress on the body, weaken the immune system, and worsen mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression. The long-term effects highlight the importance of early intervention, reducing or stopping substance use, and seeking medical treatment to manage blood pressure and mitigate complications.

Risk Factors for Hypertension

Some of the risk factors for hypertension include:

  • Age – The risk increases as you age.
  • Race – Hypertension is common among people of African heritage.
  • Family history – High blood pressure runs in families.
  • Obesity or overweight – The more you weigh, the more pressure on your artery walls.
  • Physical inactivity – Inactive people usually have higher heart rates.
  • Tobacco – Chemicals in tobacco can damage artery walls.
  • Salt – Too much salt in your diet can increase BP by causing fluid retention.
  • Alcohol – Drinking too much can damage your heart.
  • Stress – High levels of stress can cause increases in BP.
  • Chronic conditions – Some chronic conditions such as diabetes and sleep apnea can increase your risk of high BP.
  • Pregnancy – Sometimes pregnancy contributes to high blood pressure.
  • Substance abuse – Regular use of illegal substances can raise blood pressure and cause heart damage.

Addictive Drugs and Effects on Blood Pressure

The Effects of Cocaine

Cocaine is a powerful addictive drug that narrows the blood vessels. It has been clearly proven to be related to:

  • hypertensive emergencies
  • myocardial infarction (heart attack)
  • Arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat)
  • sudden death
  • strokes and seizures

Alcohol and High Blood Pressure

Drinking too much alcohol can increase BP to dangerous levels. Drinking more than three drinks in one sitting raises your blood pressure temporarily. Repeated binge drinking can increase your blood pressure in the long term.

Binge drinking is when a woman consumes four or more drinks within two hours or a man consumes five or more drinks within two hours. Moderate drinking is consuming up to one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men. Heavy drinking is consuming more than three drinks a day for women and more than four drinks a day for men.

If you have high BP, you should avoid alcohol or only drink in moderation. Also, bear in mind that alcohol has a lot of calories and might cause unwanted weight gain, which is also a risk factor for high blood pressure.

Amphetamine (including Methamphetamine) and Hypertension

Amphetamine is known to have a strong influence on BP and heart rate in normal people.  But a surge that results in hypertension has been recognized as a cause of stroke when recreational doses are used.

Regular Use of MDMA (Ecstasy)

Although fatal overdoses on MDMA are rare, they can be life-threatening with these symptoms:

  • Hypertension
  • Panic attacks
  • Seizures

One modest dose of MDMA can also reduce the efficient pumping of the heart in people who use it regularly, This is of special concern during periods of increased activity.

Anabolic Steroids and Hypertension

Anabolic-androgenic steroid use is linked to severe BP increases and hypertension. Studies done in 2016 provided scientific evidence that these steroids cause increases in hypertension and may be associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk.

Ten Symptoms of Hypertension

Unfortunately, most people with high BP don’t have any signs or symptoms, even when blood pressure readings reach dangerously high levels. Some people with high blood pressure may have headaches or shortness of breath, but not much else. Plus, even then, those symptoms don’t usually happen until high blood pressure has reached a severe stage. Thus, it’s important to be aware of any minor symptoms of high blood pressure. Some of the top symptoms of hypertension are listed below.

1. Headaches

Hypertension can cause headaches, especially if your BP is very high. Typically the headaches caused by hypertension are dull and persistent. Headaches caused by hypertension may feel more like stress headaches, except they occur more often.

2. Shortness of Breath

Older adults and individuals with lower fitness levels may feel a shortness of breath after climbing stairs, running for a bus, or other similar activities. Usually, this isn’t a cause for much concern, but people who tend to struggle with high blood pressure, especially those that also abuse substances, should know that exhibiting shortness of breath after minor physical activities can be a sign that one’s blood pressure is high. Thus, if you tend to struggle with high blood pressure and/or you abuse substances and are continuously exhibiting shortness of breath, you should have your blood pressure checked.

3. Chest Pains

Chest pains can signal high BP but not always. It’s also common to experience chests pains when having a heart attack or panic attack. Nevertheless, lasting chest pain should be a sign to get a medical determination.

4. Exhaustion

On its own, exhaustion doesn’t indicate high blood pressure, but it could be a symptom. If you feel tired frequently, the extra work the heart is doing to pump blood could be the reason. This is especially the case for individuals that abuse substances as chronic substance abuse often causes people to develop heart issues.

5. Nausea

If there is no history of diseases that affect the gallbladder or ulcers or there are no changes in diet that could cause nausea, but you feel nauseous or you repeatedly vomit, blood pressure could be the cause. Individuals with high blood pressure that experience nausea and vomiting should seek medical attention.

6. Poor Vision

Hypertension that goes untreated can lead to problems with vision and other eye diseases.

7. Ringing in the Ears

Constant ringing or buzzing in the ears that has no outside cause could be a symptom of dangerously high blood pressure.

8. Confusion

Extreme hypertension can cause lightheadedness or confusion. It can even distort the ability to speak. Some people have problems with memory and problem-solving from dangerously high BP.

9. Nosebleeds

Although high blood pressure doesn’t directly cause nosebleeds it can make one worse if it happens.

10. Kidney Damage

The kidneys can suffer damage if high BP becomes severe or goes untreated. This is because high blood pressure can damage the blood vessels that feed the kidneys, making them less able to carry out the job that they need to do. Kidney damage has many of the same symptoms as hypertension along with pressure or pain during urination.

How Can Drugs Affect the Heart?

Excessive pressure on artery walls caused by high BP can damage blood vessels as well as organs. The higher the blood pressure and the longer it goes untreated, the greater the damage.

Uncontrolled high BP can cause:

  • Stroke or heart attack
  • Aneurysm
  • Heart failure
  • Narrowed and weakened blood vessels in your kidneys
  • Narrowed, thickened, or torn blood vessels in the eyes
  • Metabolic syndrome (disorders of the body’s metabolism)
  • Dementia (blocked arteries to the brain

Can Occasional Drinking or Drug Use Cause High Blood Pressure?

Occasional moderate alcohol use may not significantly affect blood pressure in healthy individuals, but frequent binge drinking or the use of stimulants can have serious effects even if done sporadically. Individual risk factors, such as genetics, age, and pre-existing conditions, also play a role.

Is High Blood Pressure from Substance Use Permanent?

In some cases, especially with prolonged alcohol or drug abuse, hypertension can become chronic even after stopping use. However, reducing or eliminating substance use, along with medical treatment, can often bring blood pressure back to safer levels.

High blood pressure caused by substance use can often be reduced or reversed, especially if it is detected early and the underlying substance use is addressed. The first step is eliminating or significantly reducing alcohol or drug use, which can help lower blood pressure over time. Medical supervision is important, as abrupt cessation, especially of alcohol or certain drugs, may require detox or monitored care to ensure safety.

Lifestyle changes also play a critical role. Eating a heart-healthy diet low in sodium, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, managing stress, and avoiding tobacco can all help lower blood pressure. In some cases, a doctor may prescribe antihypertensive medications to manage blood pressure until lifestyle changes and substance cessation take effect.

If substance use has been prolonged or caused organ damage, blood pressure may not return fully to normal, but managing the underlying causes and following medical guidance can significantly reduce long-term risks. Regular monitoring and follow-up care are essential to prevent cardiovascular complications and support recovery.

Treatment Programs for Addictive Drug-Induced Hypertension

The National Institute on Drug Abuse believes that the best treatment for drug and alcohol addiction includes therapy and medications. However, there is evidence that there isn’t a single best approach for everyone. Thus, scientists and treatment specialists constantly find new addiction treatment possibilities. The suggested form of substance addiction treatment though includes the following treatment programs.

Detox

Medical Detoxification in a detox center is often the first step in addiction treatment. Clearing your body of drugs or alcohol is necessary to prepare the body and mind for therapy and further treatment. This is especially true for those that suffer from issues with drugs, alcohol and high blood pressure.

Withdrawal symptoms during detox can be extremely painful both emotionally and physically. Therefore, depending on the level of hypertension an individual is experiencing, he or she can be prescribed withdrawal medications to help. Ultimately, drug-induced hypertension is not only manageable, but also reversible.

Therapy

After drug toxins are eliminated from the body, many of the physical effects of addiction can be reversed. Still, there are mental and emotional challenges that need to be addressed. To treat these issues, professional addiction treatment facilities offer different types of psychotherapy that are evidence-based. Some of these forms of psychotherapy are described below.

Behavioral Therapy

There are several approaches to behavioral therapy that have been shown to be the most effective treatment for addiction. Examples of such behavioral therapies include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), rational emotive behavior therapy, etc.

Group and Individual Therapy

Although group therapy is the most common, some individuals are more effectively treated with the combination of both individual therapy and group therapy.

Medication

Occasionally, doctors may prescribe medication to individuals to help prevent them from relapsing. This is common for people that are recovering from opioid addiction.

Although opioids don’t cause hypertension, thorough medical screening should be done before prescribing methadone for relapse prevention or any other medication. In addition, Doctors may prescribe people Acamprosate to help prevent them from experiencing alcohol relapse.

Isradipine for Addiction and Hypertension

A recent study was completed that showed positive results for blood pressure medication in the treatment of addiction. The drug, Isradipine, is a prescription medication that is usually given to patients who have high BP.

A study was conducted at the University of Texas, Austin using Isradipine to determine how effective it was at handling substance abuse problems. It was believed that the drug would help the addicted brain become “de-addicted.”

The results of the study and testing showed that the BP medication stepped in to eliminate the hard-wired memories that cause the brain to trigger a craving. When Isradipine is taken for high BP, it also blocks calcium channels in the heart. This is the same mechanism that makes the drug effective for addicts because there are also calcium channels in the brain. Therefore, it is believed that the Isradipine is successfully blocking the channels and allowing the brain to re-wire itself.

I’ve been to 4 treatment centers before Harmony Place, and I can tell you without a single doubt that this is the absolute best by FAR. The past ones were luxury Residential Treatment centers that just treated every single client the same not tailoring to each individual, and were basically just in it for the money, dropping the ball each time. I can also tell you that I’ve never met the CEOs, but here, David comes to the facility almost every single day, and makes sure he get to know every individual here. He is incredibly kind, and was even willing to transfer me to another facility with a higher level of trauma therapy due to me having a lifetime of trauma and PTSD that just is going to take a long time to tackle. He truly cares about all of the clients having all of the tools that we need before getting released to the real world. No more of other CEO would ever be willing to miss an opportunity at making more money and even paired with my IMPECCABLE case manager to find a different facility that was more trauma based. My case manager, Sam, goes absolutely above and beyond in every single aspect. She makes sure you have a smooth transition into aftercare, provides out of this world advice when it comes to sobriety, and takes the time out of her day to make sure that FMLA and short-term disability are completely taken care of during your stay. I’ve never met a case manager that could ever compare to Sam. Ever. I feel lucky to have met her, genuinely. Marissa, my therapist, is SO SWEET, actually listens to you, and provides advice and therapy tailored to each individual’s experience. She’s handled every mood I’ve been in, never judged me, and allowed me to feel safe enough to tell her things I’ve never told any person or therapist in my 29 years of life. I’ve been going to therapy for the past 15 years, and none of those therapists even come close to how amazing she is. I’ve been to 4 other treatment centers in my life and none even come close to Harmony Place. The facility is clean, organized, and high-end. I would recommend Harmony place to my family, friends, and anyone seeking treatment. I feel SO BLESSED to have landed in their hands. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE IN THE CLINICAL STAFF BEYOND WORDS. I love you guys ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. I feel more confident than ever in my Recovery.

Where to begin.. Harmony is a place that will forever be a part of my story as the first step in my recovery journey. I’m so grateful for this program. The staff is very friendly, and many of them understand what addiction is like, for they themselves have recovery stories of their own. They have an awesome team of therapists, group facilitators, nurses, RA technicians, medical and health professionals, a wonderful case manager for aftercare that cares deeply for your next steps; making sure you are set up for success. They have a wonderful admissions team (shoutout to Marielle who was so kind and understanding of my messed up situation). Everyone is very relatable and friendly. They invest heavily in the importance of diet and nutrition too - there’s a full time professional chef. I gained all the weight I lost and wanted back in the first two weeks lol. On top of the intensive programming they do throughout the day, they take us out to experience various kinds of outside groups to get a taste of the real world, and also take us on social outings during the weekend. If you’re serious about getting better this place will meet you where you’re at and prepare you to launch with a renewed mind and heart.

I can't begin to explain just how amazing Harmony Place is. In fact, when we sit down with the owner, Jeff, and clinical director, David, on Monday mornings to have a house meeting, they ask us what they could be doing better. A bigger blender for smoothies is the ONLY thing we could come up with. Let me begin by addressing some negative reviews. If you notice many of them are from people, or are referring to people who have been asked to leave. It is because of harmony places protection of their clients that provide ideal conditions for healing and progress. There is a screening process that it is implemented where they make sure the clients they admit are ready to start a life of sobriety. Some people slip through the cracks. Some people find out a few days or weeks in that they've changed their minds. Some are inappropriate and break rules. It happens. When Harmony Place ask people to leave, It's because they are protecting the people who are here that want treatment. In effect, they're providing exactly what I needed for a genuine start to recovery. When I began my search for a treatment center, my requirements were that the facility's provide an environment in which its residents all want to be there and that it is ethically ran. I got that and so much more at Harmony Place. As well as a structured routine, they also provide a confidential and nurturing environment where one feels safe and where profound healing can begin. Their program offers a sound foundation where further progress in sober living is almost guaranteed. In group meetings, we enjoy getting to know ourselves again and with deeper understanding about why we are the way we are. We are provided with skills to handle real life. Its here that I've come to understand that its not addiction that has driven me to make a mess of my life. It is the trauma that I endured and not processing it correctly that lead to poor thinking patterns that opened the door to addiction resulting in poor life management. So we start at the bottom. Trauma. They help us understand that trauma has led to our own toxicity, what that trauma looks like and how to get out of our own way. Process groups help us learn how to take accountability and foster healthier relationships. I learned here that changing the way I think is absolutely possible and imperative to the healing process. Harmony Place offered me hope when I previously felt I was unfixable and a support team that truly loves me. Even after I leave here, I have contacts that almost demand I keep in touch and an alumni meeting where I can return to the facility on Thursday nights. I wasn't a 12 stepper when I came here but my first experience with it was not one where I was ready to stop using. I understand now that the steps will work for me. It's certainly is not the only modality that they teach. In one group, we are provided an opportunity to sit with a recently retired medical doctor to just ask questions. Another is with a nutritionist. There are a handful of people IN recovery that come to lead groups that are all accredited highly specialized where I felt understood and not judged. The knowledge I have gained here is life changing. It is also versatile and relatable for all types of people. my favorite group was dialectical behavioral therapy. There are breathing classes and sound bath groups and I started doing yoga in the morning. There's a dharma meeting they take you offsite that focuses on Buddhist values. A fantastic onsight chef provides three meals and you can have special requests. We facilitated our own Movie nights during free time. I cant forget to mention you get your own one on one meetings with your assigned primary therapist and there is comprehensive medical support complete with 24/7 nurses and a doctor that shows up throughout the week. If this is what you need to recover and you have mediCAL, cancel your mediCAL and get insurance Harmony Place accepts if you can. There are people to help you with that as well. Just call. Many, many thanks to the staff. ✔️Another life changed.🙏
